In this provocative melodrama from the Netherlands, Sammy (Christel Oomen) is a 15-year-old who has recently become very keenly aware of her sexual needs and her allure to men. With her parents away, Sammy and her older brother Jakob (Dragan Bakema) have to look after themselves, with Jakob bringing home the bacon (literally) working in a meat-packing plant. Sammy thinks that her brother is overly attentive and wants him out of her life; she goads him by seducing his best friend's dad, and when that isn't enough, she begins to make advances on Jakob, much to his distress. The first feature from director Michiel van Jaarsveld, Drift was shown in competition at the 2001 Rotterdam Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

A professional woman falls in love with a potentially murderous neighbor in her apartment building in this gripping Dutch thriller. Roos, a divorcee doctor with a young son, has just moved into her ultra-modern apartment beside the sea. One of her first visitors is Eric, an attractive copywriter who shares his suspicions that fellow tenant and housekeeper for Roos may be in danger. Sure enough, the housekeeper is found murdered in her apartment. Meanwhile, Roos is being harassed by an obscene caller. Unbeknownst to her, she is also being spied upon by a binocular toting peeper. Eric becomes buddies with her son Davy. Soon he tries to buddy up to her, and despite the warnings of other tenants, finds herself equally attracted to him. Eric is arrested as a suspect for the housekeeper's murder and also on the suspicion that he killed his wife and Roos begins to feel paranoid. Her fear increases when another woman in the building is found strangled. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide

Though his devout Catholic parents wanted him to become a missionary, young Matthijs Vermeulen had other wants and desires. Instead of entering the priesthood, he became one of the two most influential music critics in modern Dutch history. He was also a gifted composer, but his rivalry with the other great critic of the era effectively prevented his music from getting the hearing it deserved. This biographical drama is peppered with surrealistic effects which, curiously, serve to effectively underscore the storyline, rather than distracting from it as they so often do. Another fine feature of this film is that it includes so much of the great critic's own music. Most notably, it includes excerpts from his musical rendition of Rupert Brooke's poem about World War I. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide
