This fact-based TV movie stars John Ritter as Ed Chandler, whose life is torn asunder when his daughter Missy (Anna Chlumsky) is diagnosed with cancer. The nature of Missy's illness obliges Ed to spend many hours away from his job as a car salesman to commiserate with her daughter's doctors at the hospital. Then one day, Ed shows up at work to be coldly informed that he has been fired--and there is no one to whom he can go to plead his case. The plight of the Chandler family ultimately leads to the creation of the Federal Family and Medical Leave Act, which allows persons up to six weeks' leave from their jobs when their family members are suffering from serious illnesses. Telecast by CBS on January 21, 1997, Child's Wish (cable title: Fighting for Justice made headlines when it first aired because of the appearance of President Bill Clinton in the final scene--the first time that a sitting President ever starred as "himself" in a dramatic film (as well as the first such scene to be lensed on location in the Oval Office!) ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Originally telecast by Britain's BBC and Ireland's RTA in June of 2001, this two-part, four-hour documentary charted the tempestuous history of Northern Ireland from "Bloody Sunday" in 1972 to the Good Friday Accords of 1998, with some speculation on the future of the region. The content of the series should be implicit from the episode titles: "Bomb and Ballot Box" and "Talking to Terrorists." In the African nation of Malawi, disease, poverty and famine have taken a horrible toll, especially on young people -- in a country of twelve million people, one million are orphaned children. Massachusetts congressman Barney Frank achieved an uncomfortable sort of public recognition in 1990 when, three years after he came out of the closet as a gay man, he was involved in a scandal involving his use of the services of a male prostitute. Frank weathered the storm of controversy and was reelected to office, and in 1998, when President Bill Clinton was facing impeachment in the wake of a sex scandal of his own, Frank became one of the president's most outspoken champions in Washington, D.C. Let's Get Frank is a documentary on the outspoken representative, which focuses primarily on his defense of Clinton and his perspective on the so-called "culture wars" between liberal and conservative political factions. Let's Get Frank was the first feature film from director Bart Everly. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Filmmaker, philosopher and activist Godfrey Reggio completes the film trilogy he began with Koyaanisqatsi and Powaqqatsi in this visually striking examination of the impact of technology upon our culture. Naqoyqatsi is a word from the Hopi language which roughly translates as "war as a way of life" or "a life of killing each other," and in this film Reggio uses a intense barrage of images - most of which have been drawn from existing film footage and then altered using a variety of optical and digital techniques - to express his belief that technology is no longer at war with nature. Instead, we have allowed technology to become the "nature" in which we live, and as it stretches our physical and emotional environment in new and troubling directions, we have created for ourselves a world of greater chaos, violence, and confusion. As with his previous features in this trilogy, Naqoyqatsi features an original score by Philip Glass, featuring cello solos by Yo-Yo Ma; director Steven Soderbergh, a noted admirer of Reggio's first two films, served as executive producer. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Born in Oakland, CA, in 1919, Fred Korematsu was the son of Japanese immigrants who, when the United States entered World War II in 1941, wanted to do his duty as an American and volunteer for the Army. Instead, Korematsu and the other Japanese-American residents of California were rounded up and placed in internment camps, as many inside the government believed that their loyalties would be with Japan rather than America and that they would attempt to sabotage the U.S. war effort. Outraged, Korematsu refused to go, and for a time became a fugitive from justice; he was eventually captured and put on trial. The American Civil Liberties Union sided with Korematsu after his arrest, believing the internment orders were a direct violation of the Constitution, and helped Korematsu take his case to the Supreme Court. In 1944, the Supreme Court found in favor of the U.S. government, but in 1981, Peter Irons, a law professor at the University of California in San Diego, began investigating Korematsu's case and discovered that government prosecutors suppressed evidence that would have cleared Korematsu and freed the other Japanese-Americans held by the government. Of Civil Wrongs and Rights: The Fred Koramatsu Story is a documentary that examines his long, remarkable journey from being a convicted criminal in 1942 to receiving the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1998. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

President Clinton: Final Days shows a lost and lonely Bill Clinton (playing himself) wandering the empty corridors of the White House during the final days of his presidency. Ignored by his staff and by the press, Clinton fills his time with such activities as mowing the lawn, watching movies, and cleaning the presidential limousine. Aside from the classic sharpness of its satire, what distinguishes President Clinton: Final Days is its authenticity -- that's the real White House lawn, the real presidential staff, the real press briefing room, and so on. Produced for the 2000 White House Correspondents Dinner, President Clinton: Final Days is an unprecedented exercise in self-deprecating political humor. ~ Richard Gilliam, All Movie Guide

Carlos Menem was the president of Argentina between 1989 and 1999; under his administration, many of the nation's public works were privatized, and the nation's peso was linked to the value of the American dollar. When the nation quickly fell into debt, the International Monetary Fund stepped in to give the nation massive loans -- a tactic that only sent Argentina deeper into the hole, as the government struggled to pay the interest on their notes. The results were little short of disastrous, sending the economy into a tailspin and forcing much of Argentina's industry to shut down. In 2001, following the example of other out-of-work laborers, the former employees of an Argentinean auto plant walked into the abandoned factory where they once worked and announced their plans to take it over and run the business as a cooperative. The auto company's owners soon stepped in to claim what they said was theirs, while labor advocates argued that since the company had been floated by IMF-backed loans before it closed, the true ownership of the shop was an open question. The Take is a documentary by activist filmmakers Avi Lewis and Naomi Klein that chronicles the standoff between the displaced laborers occupying their former workplace and the private and public forces who united against them. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

During the infamous World Trade Organization protests in Seattle in November 1999, TV viewers around the world were treated to explosive footage of small bands of would-be anarchists smashing Starbucks windows and engaging in confrontations with the police. Trade Off, Shaya Mercer's documentary about the protests, gives audiences an alternate and well-balanced view of what happened. Most importantly, Mercer chooses to focus on the months of planning that proceeded the protests, shedding light on the diversity and intelligence of the organizers behind the event. College students, Teamster boss Jim Hoffa, representatives of French farmers' unions, and documentary filmmaker Michael Moore are all given screen time, as are the Seattle citizens who question the protests, and the police who nervously prepare to come face to face with rioters. As a kind of epilogue to the action, the smaller but no less passionate WTO protests that occurred the following April are shown, leaving viewers with the sense that Mercer is intent on giving us the message that this is an issue that will not simply evaporate. ~ Rebecca Flint Marx, All Movie Guide
