This stylized treatment of the life of celebrated Argentine tango singer and composer Carlos Gardel (1890-1935) is based on the play El Dia Que Me Quieras by Venezuelan playwright Jose Ignacio Cabrujas, who also wrote the screenplay. Gardel is a giant figure in his native country, where he is considered the man who put Argentine tango music "on the map." He worked in Hollywood and attained widespread popularity throughout Latin America. He died in an airplane crash on his way from Venezuela to Mexico. In the film, scenes from Gardel's life are interwoven and contrasted with moments from the life of Pio Miranda (Fausto Verdial), a Marxist revolutionary of the period. The film examines the process whereby real men are turned into heroic, mythical figures. Argentine actor Claudio Berge does an amazing job embodying the legendary Gardel. The film contains much of Gardel's music, which we hear in original recording lip-synced by Begre. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

Filled with symbolism, this metaphorical drama by Colombian director Carlos Mayolo is centered on an old mansion, isolated and ambiguous in its actual location. Revolving around the mansion is a static society made up of a pilot, landowner, priest, soldier, and other people representative of professions or occupations. This group is sustained by a kind of "earth mother" named Machiche (Vicky Hernandez) and has retained its status quo for a long time. A young girl (Adriana Herran) appears on the scene and starts to affect the group's long-held equilibrium until cracks, and dissensions begin to crumble the entire social structure. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

Darting first in one direction and then in another like a school of erratic fish, this film starts out (in 1956) focusing briefly on a Colombian military dictatorship and political terrorism then brings in the bourgeois class as co-conspirators in the dictatorship and next enters the bizarre lifestyle of a wealthy family fighting over the last testament of a just-deceased matriarch. From there, the family members are shown to have quite an incestuous relationship, and eventually vampires come into the picture, as well as unbridled slaughter. By that time, the neglected, wounded plot is beyond resuscitation. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide
