A Czech family's lives are turned upside down when they pull up stakes and head for the big city in this comedy without dialogue from writer and director Tomas Vorel. A father (Bolek Polivka) moves his family from the country into the city, where he lands a job at a slaughterhouse. As the parents deal with their problems, their teenage son (Tomas Vorel Jr.), a skateboarding anarchist who shuns meat, devotes his spare time to vandalizing the butchering plant, while his sister (Anicka Marhoulova) struggles to keep up with her schoolwork. This Czech-French drama examines the exquisitely tormented psyche of a young Czech in love. It is set in 1984 and 1994 respectively. Andrej is only twenty one and is in love with two women. He has been cruel to Eva, the first. The second is an achingly beautiful redhead, Krystina. Because he is also faced with a mandatory stint in the Czech military, Andrej begins drinking heavily. While he is in the army, Krystina pressures him to escape to save her from her beastly penthouse lover. The military life is terrible. That compounded with Krystina's insistance causes the indecisive Andrej to break down. In turmoil, the young man scales a dark smokestack uncaring of the winter cold around him. For hours he clings to a ladder paralyzed by vertigo, but unable to decide. Around him the snow continues to fall, and the wind to blow. The story then jumps forward to 1994. Andrej has just left the asylum and now lives in a quiet rural home. All is well, but is it really? ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi

Meanwhile, Olga and her friends find themselves growing up against the backdrop of Czechoslovakia's "Normalization" campaign. This biography of Ludwig von Beethoven (played here by Gary Oldman) builds its narrative around an actual letter found after his death, addressed only to the composer's "immortal beloved." The responsibility of discovering this mysterious person's identity falls to Beethoven's friend and secretary (Jeroen Krabbé), who sets out on an investigation that soon becomes an exploration of the composer's life. Through recollections and scattered hints, we receive glimpses of Beethoven's relationships with women, particularly his close interaction with a pair of very different Countesses. The film also pays prominent attention to the composer's oddly obsessive relationship with the young nephew whom he attempted to mold in his own image, and Beethoven's eventual hearing loss and descent into emotional instability. ~ Judd Blaise, Rovi

Actor/director Vit Olmer was at the controls of Bony a Klid. Look carefully at the title of this Czechoslovakian drama, and the subject matter should become clear in a matter of moments. Yes, this is a retelling of the Bonnie-and-Clyde legend, East European style. The production values aren't quite up to the 1967 Warren Beatty-Faye Dunaway classic; within its own limitations, however Olmer's film is a respectable and credible adaptation of the familiar story. Veronika Jenikova and Roman Skamene fill the title roles this time out. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
