As if being a teen-aged girl weren't difficult enough, Sarah has the additional complication of being deaf. She blames herself and her handicap for the separation of her parents. When she goes to the countryside to visit her grandfather, she experiences the first stirrings of love with David, a boy she meets there. Unusually for such a teen-centered movie, this drama does not go in for easy solutions or a tidy ending, and Sarah can be found at the end of the movie pondering both her new problems and most of her old ones. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

The miners strike in the Australian coal fields during the 1930s provides a factual basis for this drama. The organized miners protest against the use of scab labor and the dreadful working conditions. But nothing is resolved and the tension climaxes with the miners, some of them members of the Communist Party, building a blockade and stranding themselves in a mine shaft. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide

As this gritty drama about a young teen's fight to overcome her past begins to unfold, flashbacks are interspersed with the present-tense story. This technique keeps viewers wondering exactly where Sam (Tracey Mann) is going: in the direction that led her to jail, or towards a normal life? After she gets out of prison, her old friends and a corrupt cop named Brady (Bill Hunter) provide formidable obstacles. They all see her as a rebellious delinquent in spite of her efforts to change. Faced with nearly insurmountable odds, Sam's struggle for her future is not going to be easily won. Mann won a 1980 Best Actress Award from the Australian Film Institute for her performance. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide
