Combining the best elements of JAG and CSI, the CBS crime series Navy NCIS focused on an elite, independent unit of the U.S. Navy, which, in its pursuit of military-related criminal investigations, was answerable to no higher authority -- and thus, of course, was utterly impartial and incorruptible. The head of the series' Naval Criminal Investigative Service was the fiercely independent Leroy Jethro Gibbs, played by Mark Harmon. His team included eccentric coroner "Ducky" Mallard (David McCallum), streetwise ex-homicide detective Anthony Dinozzo (Michael Weatherly), longtime Secret Service operative Caitlin Todd (Sasha Alexander), and irreverent young goth-girl lab tech Abby Sciuto (Pauley Perrette). Created by Donald P. Bellisario, Navy NCIs first aired September 23, 2003. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Tony (Carlos Bernard) and Michelle (Reiko Aylesworth) are keeping Chapelle (Paul Schulze) doped up and out of sight. Hammond (Randle Mell) calls from Division, demanding to know where he is. Hammond, tipped off by Carrie (Lourdes Benedicto), is bringing in a team, so Tony sets Michelle up off-site so she'll be able to continue assisting Jack (Kiefer Sutherland). Alex (Rick D. Wasserman) is on the run, and Jack chases him onto a rooftop, where Alex draws a gun. Jack is forced to shoot him in the leg, and Alex appears ready to surrender when he stumbles off the roof, seriously injuring his head. Just as the chopper is arriving from CTU to evacuate them, Chapelle is found, and orders Carrie to bring the chopper back. Alex dies as the chopper flies off. Jack's last hope is to use Sherry (Penny Johnson Jerald) to set Kingsley (Tobin Bell) up. Michelle links to Alex's computer and shows Jack how to use his software to simulate Alex's voice, so they can trick Kingsley. Michelle and Tony are arrested. Sherry calls Kingsley and offers to turn over Alex in exchange for all the evidence Kingsley has that could be used against her. They arrange a meeting at the L.A. Coliseum, but Kingsley is suspicious and arranges to have snipers in place in case anything goes wrong. As he takes Sherry to the meeting, Jack's heart, weakened by the torture he endured, gives out, and he drives off the road. ~ Josh Ralske, Rovi

Syed Ali (Francesco Quinn) calls Marie (Laura Harris) to tell her that the plan has changed. He needs her to change her appearance, get the trigger for the nuke, and bring it to Omar. Jack (Kiefer Sutherland) takes a frazzled Kate (Sarah Wynter) to the mosque so she can ID Ali. To save precious time, she volunteers to go inside the mosque wearing a burqa and confirm that Ali is there. She sees him inside, and reports back to Jack, but after the prayer service, Ali doesn't come out of the building, so Jack orders the CTU team to move in. Mike (Jude Ciccolella) suggests that Palmer (Dennis Haysbert) take Stanton (Harris Yulin) out of commission, despite the lack of hard evidence, and do whatever it takes to get information from him. While Sherry (Penny Johnson Jerald) presses Lynne (Michelle Forbes) for information, Palmer has Stanton arrested for treason. Stanton continues to claim he knows nothing. Palmer asks Ted (Steven Culp), a Secret Service agent with a background in secret ops, to interrogate Stanton, using any means necessary. Jack (Kiefer Sutherland) tells Kate (Sarah Wynter) why he's taking her from CTU, and asks if she's willing to accept the risk to help him prevent a war. Then Jack realizes that Yusuf (Donnie Keshawarz) is following them. He's figured out what's going on, and he offers to help Jack find the evidence. Carrie (Lourdes Benedicto) tells Tony (Carlos Bernard) that Michelle (Reiko Aylesworth) helped Jack get Kate out. Tony confronts Michelle and she denies it. Tony tells Carrie to track all of Michelle's calls and emails. Jack leaves Kate in the car while he goes to meet with Wallace (Gregg Henry), who turns out to be the seventh man from the commando team at the airport, who killed his own comrades. Wallace tells Jack that the people who hired him are now trying to kill him. He'll give Jack the evidence that the recording of Ali was phony, if Kate uses her father's Department of Defense privileges to charter a flight and get him out of the country. Unfortunately, Kate will have to go with him, and Wallace lets Jack know he'll kill her once they reach their destination. Wallace secretly signals his outside man to grab Kate, but Yusuf stops him. Jack forces Wallace to play it his way, but soon, the whole group is under attack. Lynne (Michelle Forbes) and Mike (Jude Ciccolella) both believe that Palmer (Dennis Haysbert) is putting too much faith in the instincts of a single agent. ~ Josh Ralske, Rovi

CTU is in shambles, with parts of the building cordoned off because they might collapse. Tony (Carlos Bernard) tells Mason (Xander Berkeley) he's leaving to investigate a lead -- a local businessman who's had contact with known terrorists. Tony goes to the Warner house to interrogate Reza (Phillip Rhys). Bob (John Terry) and Kate (Sarah Wynter) try to keep Marie (Laura Harris) from finding out about the investigation going on in the house on her wedding day, while an indignant Reza denies any knowledge of Syed Ali. When Marie learns that Kate hired a private investigator to look into Reza's background, she explodes and tells Kate to leave. Jack (Kiefer Sutherland) calls Mason to let him know that Nina (Sarah Clarke) was the source of the terrorists' information. She's being transferred to CTU for interrogation, and Mason is determined to keep Jack, who's returning to CTU for a debriefing, away from her. Nina is brought in, and offers to give up everything she knows in exchange for a full presidential pardon. Jack realizes that Mason has radiation sickness, and uses the information to coerce Mason into letting him handle Nina's interrogation.
