In the first episode of a two-part story, Hercules (Kevin Sorbo) is guided to Asgard by a disturbing dream. Upon his arrival, Hercules tangles with Norse god Thor (Ben Reed), who at first considers the Greek visitor as his enemy. Ultimately the two immortals combine their powers to prevent the death of Baldur (Rupert Cocks) and thereby avoid the prophecy that Asgard -- and the rest of the world -- will be plunged into Rangnarok (aka "The End of All Things"). Unfortunately, Norse god of mischief Loki (Ian Hughes) messes things up. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

The somber fifth-season continuity of Hercules: The Legendary Journeys is briefly interrupted with this comic episode spotlighting those lovable rapscallions Autolycus (Bruce Campbell) and Salmoneus (Robert Trebor). Stealing a magic lantern, the boys conjure up a sexy genie named -- what else? -- Jinni (Hilary Thompson). Alas, the curvaceous bottle imp can't seem to get any of the boys' wishes right -- .and besides, this is an exercise in "Be careful what you wish for." The highlight occurs when Salmoneus, unable to make up his mind what he wants from genie, is split into two halves: "Cry Baby Sal" and "Hyper Sal." ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Though flattered by Gabrielle's (Renee O'Connor) ongoing efforts to chronicle her exploits for posterity, Xena (Lucy Lawless) suggests that her friend forsake facts for the moment and turn to fiction writing. Unfortunately, this occurs just when the jealous Aphrodite (Alexandra Tydings), angered that even little kiddies prefer Xena to her, has decided to cast a spell upon Gabrielle's scrolls. As a result, everything that Gabrielle has written down suddenly becomes "reality" -- and suffice to say that it isn't a pretty sight. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

In the last of five made-for-TV movies starring Kevin Sorbo as legendary superhero Hercules, the title character has settled down in a peaceful existence as a farmer with his beloved mortal family. Though Hercules tries hard to teach his children nonviolence, his mighty strength must come back into play when a disgruntled Minotaur begins kidnapping the local citizenry. In his efforts to defeat the monster, Hercules is reunited with his old friends Iolaus (Michael Hurst) and Deianeira (Tawny Kitaen). It ultimately falls to Hercules' Olympian father, Zeus (Anthony Quinn), to prove that the misunderstood Minotaur is not so much a villain as a victim of low self esteem. Many of the action highlights are lifted from Sorbo's four previous Hercules films. Syndicated in the U.S. beginning in late November, 1994, Hercules in the Maze of the Minotaur served as the pilot for the weekly series Hercules: The Legendary Journeys. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

New Zealand educator Sylvia Ashton-Warner (played by Eleanor David) is the subject of this informative and slightly uneven biography, based on the events in Ashton-Warner's adult life. During the 1930s Ashton-Warner moves to a remote village with her husband who has been appointed to be the headmaster in the school there. She tries to teach the Maori children but is having absolutely no luck at all -- that is especially discouraging considering that she is also fighting off culture shock and the effects of a recent emotional breakdown. Driven to find some solace in music, painting, and sculpting, she one day realizes she can use these types of creative activities as teaching tools -- and begins to develop an innovative way to reach her students. She is surprisingly successful, a fact which does not interest the all-male administrators at the school who insist she teach using traditional methods. The stand-off is severe enough that the men burn the manuscript for a new primer Ashton-Warner wrote, insisting later that this was an accident. No one seems to have come out a winner in Sylvia Ashton-Warner's battle with the provincial educators, least of all the students. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

Dead Kids, aka Strange Behavior, is a creepy exercise from director Michael Laughlin--who conceived this as part one of an abortive "Strange Trilogy" which also included 1983's Strange Invaders. Although lensed in New Zealand, the film is set in a sleepy American town, in which a series of gory murders committed by local teenagers are linked to a twisted brainwashing scheme by a deranged behavioral psychologist (note irony please). Despite some humorous details (e.g. one killer dons a Tor Johnson mask) and a nostalgia for '50s pulp horrors (not to mention a fondness for splattery death scenes), the disparate plot elements don't come together as well as they should, failing to live up to the premise's potential for guilty chuckles or gasps of horror. Fiona Lewis is sexually menacing as the mad doc's assistant, but Louise Fletcher's wasted role may make viewers pine for Nurse Ratched. ~ Cavett Binion, All Movie Guide
