Made for television, A Father's Revenge stars Brian Dennehy as a high school basketball coach. When terrorists pull off a political kidnapping in West Germany, Dennehy's stewardess wife Joanna Cassidy is among the hostages. Fed up with the apparent foot-dragging of the authorities, Dennehy takes personal action in effecting Joanna's rescue. He hires Ron Silver's band of mercenaries, then heads to Germany to bring back his wife himself. Credibility is stretched to the limit at times, but the three stars are at their peak. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

The psychological suspense story was based on Patricia Highsmith's novel Two Faces of January. A young man named Chester MacFarland (Charles Brauer) has embezzled a fortune from a U.S. bank, and after he and his wife escape to Switzerland to pick up his cash, they change their identities and head to Athens. Once safely in that city, they commit a second crime: they accidentally kill a police detective. A young archaeology student had been trailing after the couple since he first saw them because Chester looks just like his father. His curiosity puts him at the scene of the killing when it happens, and now all three protagonists face an uncertain future. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

Four inventive teachers at a normal French high school act up and act out some of their imaginative ploys to either help kids learn, or to undermine the opposition to their unorthodox teaching. Frederic (Patrick Bruel), Michel (Fabrice Luchini), Gerard Laurent Gamelon), and Francis (Christophe Bourseiller) try valiantly to get their students to hit the books, but their tactics are not always appreciated -- and may seem a little trite to viewers who have been around that block before. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

Weak in script and plot, this comedy about the differences (or not) between royalty and the commoners that toil for a living has little to recommend it. Princess Charlotte (Anemone) is scheduled to marry a boring duke, but before that event happens, Paul (Thierry Lhermitte) has taken a bet that he can seduce her. He does, profits from his act, and then falls in love with her. Meanwhile, the wedding with the duke is still planned, and it remains to be seen whether Paul will give in and give up. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

This amusing parody of a romantic melodrama revolving around the rich and famous begins on the Riviera when countess Vera da Vinci (Violetta Sanchez) is hit by a car driven by Rudiger Keienburg (Wolfgang Joop), a wealthy fashion mogul from Dusseldorf. A romance between the guilt-struck Rudiger and the rundown countess begins from the time she is in the hospital, with the main damage (to her face) repaired by plastic surgery. Parallel to this budding romance, is another between a last-minute, stand-in model at a fashion show and the manager/designer of the show. But then, horror of horrors, the countess and the enamored Rudiger find out that they are long-lost step-siblings -- and worse yet, the family tree is a gnarled one at that. Between the dialogue that pokes fun at the speech patterns found in these melodramas, and the costumes that exaggerate their dress, this spoof of a genre will entertain even the non-fashion conscious. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

The Gift was based on Bankers Also Have Souls, a play by Valme and Terzolli. To honor retiring co-worker Gregoire (Pierre Mondy), a group of bank employees pool their money and purchase a farewell gift: gorgeous prostitute Barbara (Clio Goldsmith). Since Gregoire is married to the luscious Antonella (Claudia Cardinale), one wonders what planet his friends have been on the past few years. Though it promises a great deal, The Gift is basically harmless and, at times, humorless. The film works best when it eschews sniggling sexiness and concentrates on personalities. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
