In Perth in 1957, teen-aged Ken seems like the nearest thing to an expert on sex that even his uncle (who was given the task of delivering a "birds-and-the-bees" speech to him) has seen. It goes without saying that he's never actually engaged in any sexual activity with a woman. His much vaunted exertise is based solely on his being very interested in the subject. He lives with his single mother and a twin sister, and goes to school until he is expelled for selling girlie pictures to his classmates. After that, he is put to work at his uncle's garment factory. He makes a bunch of pals, and while is mother is experiencing a romantic interlude of her own, the guys head off to find a whorehouse in a mining town so that the virgins of the group can surpass that obstacle, and the rest can have a bit of fun. They accomplish their objectives without much ado; in this case getting there is most of the fun. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

Broaching an issue that would lead to considerable litigation and controversy over the years, first-time director Bill Bennett looks at the experience of one Australian Vietnam vet as he discovers he has leukemia and traces the probable cause to the defoliant known as Agent Orange (for the color of the containers) used by the Americans in the Vietnam war. When Col. Turner (Chris Haywood and his wife (Jennifer Cluff) and children move into a neighborhood of other veterans, they begin to notice that there is an unusual amount of sickness among the men. Then the colonel himself starts seeing rashes and bruises on his skin. He goes to a doctor and is diagnosed with leukemia. Convinced that this illness, like the others in the neighborhood, was caused by his exposure to Agent Orange, Turner begins a lawsuit to claim compensation. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

This Australian sitcom was the brainchild of a British producer, namely Vince Powell of Thames Television. Set in Sydney, the series starred John Bluthal as Enzo Pacelli, an Italian immigrant working as a cab driver. Although Enzo and wife Maria (Arianthe Galani) remained loyal to their old-world values (and their native language -- at least most of the time), their children were thoroughly assimilated "Aussies," so much so that they could not understand anything spoken by their monolingual Italian grandma (and vice versa). The 26 episodes of Home Sweet Home were originally telecast from 1980 to 1982. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

- John Bluthal, Arianthe Galani, (more)
