In this romantic comedy from India, Raju (Anil Kapoor) is a young man who has grown up under the thumb of his step-mother, who has raised him to be a farmer. When he attends a friend's wedding, he meets a woman named Saraswati (Madhuri Dixit) and quickly falls in love with her. Raju longs to see Saraswati again and meets up with her at a festival, where he saves her from an attack by a pervert. However, while he's walking her home, the pair are caught in a rainstorm and must take refuge in a barn. When they return the next morning, everyone is convinced they spent the night together in an inappropriate manner, and Raju marries Saraswati to save her reputation. Set in the early 1900s, this film follows a young man named Devdas (Shah Rukh Khan) on his way home to India after having spent the past ten years in London. As the news reaches Devdas and his ex-love Paro's (Aishwarya Rai) respective households, the family matriarchs remember when the young couple were still children. When Devdas' mother found out the two wanted to get married, she refused to give her consent, and in doing so, set off a sequence of events which would lead Devdas into alcoholism. Though Paro has agreed to an arranged marriage with a wealthy landowner, she still loves Devdas, and is determined to lure him away from his constant drinking. Rajkaran is an ambitious man with no way of accomplishing his goals. He is in debt to moneylenders in a big way, and his dream of owning his own cab (he's a cabdriver) is as far away as it ever was, despite his penchant for pinching pennies. He lives with a woman who is as ambitious as he is, a woman who has run away from her husband to be with him. He learns of a scheme to put up an illegal factory which dyes textiles, and he borrows even more money from a local bigwig. The East Indian Ilaaka stars Sanjay Dutt as a young bootlegger. Orphaned at an early age, the bootlegger was raised by a criminal, thus he knows no other life than crime. Even so, he's an affable sort, and as such becomes good friends with police inspector Mithun Chakraborty. Once the inspector discovers what the bootlegger is up to, he attempts to reform the boy. In this thriller from India, Shankar (Shah Rukh Khan) is a mute servant of Rajasaab (Amrish Puri). Shankar is a loyal follower, however, he falls in love with his master's wife, Gauri (Madhuri Dixit). When Shankar and Gauri run off, Shankar is thrown from a cliff and left for dead, and Gauri is sold to a bordello. Shankar is found by a native and is slowly nursed back to health. Having also regained his ability to speak, Shankar returns to Rajasaab to rescue Gauri and get revenge. Koyla is based on the 1990 Tony Scott film Revenge, which itself is an adaptation of a novella by Jim Harrison.

In the north Indian state of Bihar, Ketki (Madhuri Dixit) marries weak Vinay (Ayub Khan), who is exploited by hard-nosed businessman Tirpat (Mohan Joshi). Two brothers take different paths in life, which leads both of them into danger in this drama from India. Kishan (Jackie Shroff) and Karan (Anil Kapoor) are two brothers who move to Bombay to find their fortunes. Kishan falls in with Anna (Nana Patekar), a drug dealer; Karan becomes friends with a policeman (Anupam Kher), falls in love with schoolteacher Paru (Madhuri Dixit), and decides to go to America to further his education. As Kishan sinks deeper into the criminal underworld, Anna discovers the policeman Karan used to know has been assigned to bring him to justice. Anna intends to kill the cop rather than lose control of his criminal empire, and Kishan learns of Anna's deadly plan just as Karan is about to return home. Kishan is determined to keep his brother away from himself and the policeman to protect his safety, but Karan isn't so sure he wants to be sent away to Delhi, since he hopes to renew his relationship with Paru.
