The violence that has gripped the nation of Chad finds a parallel in one man's shattered life in this drama from writer and director Mahamat-Saleh Haroun. In his youth, Adam (Youssouf Djaoro) was a promising competitive swimmer, and now, at age 55, he's in charge of the pool at an upscale resort hotel. Adam is content in his life with his wife, Mariam (Hadje Fatime Ngoua), and grown son, Abdel (Diouc Koma), but circumstances outside are tearing his world apart. A Chinese firm has taken over the hotel where Adam works, and his new boss, Madame Wang (Li Heling), first fires his best friend, David (Marius Yelolo), from the kitchen staff, and then demotes Adam to gatekeeper. While Adam's professional life is a shambles, his personal life is worse; a local military figure demands that Adam contribute funds to Chad's ongoing civil war, and when he refuses, Abdel is forced to become a soldier for the state. Once Adam realizes the severity of his mistake, it's too late for him to change his mind. Dubbed The Wizard of Oz meets Karl Marx's version of It's a Wonderful Life, this film, directed by Jean-Claude Brisseau, is a wild, ludicrous comedy about an ill kind-hearted mechanic who becomes a bank robber. Young couple Fred (Stanislas Merhar) and Elodie (Coralie Revel) live in a low-rent tenement with their infant child. Fred is generous to a fault; he gives his money away to the point of endangering his family's finances. The final straw for the beautiful Elodie comes when Fred gets fired for head-butting his boss -- she dumps him. Lovelorn and crestfallen, Fred rashly robs a post office in order to help an aging beggar. He escapes with a stolen car and comely postal clerk Sandrine (Raphaele Godin), who has long had a crush on him. Together the two spread the booty Robin Hood-style to their fellow downtrodden. While hiding out in a school, they encounter Maquette (Emile Abossolo M'Bo), a supposed African prince who has been turned into a penniless exile thanks to his enemies. Later the three head south. While Fred knocks over the occasional liquor store, Sandrine patiently teaches her new beau to read. ~ Jonathan Crow, Rovi

Jim Jarmusch's deadpan comedy-of-the-night is a collection of five vignettes taking place in the enclosed space of a cab ride, each occurring simultaneously in five different cities and five different time zones -- Los Angeles, New York City, Paris, Rome, and Helsinki. The Los Angeles episode takes place at dusk, as high-powered casting agent Victoria (Gena Rowlands) gets a ride from L.A. International Airport with tomboy driver Corky (Winona Ryder), who would rather go on driving her cab than take up Victoria's offer to make her a superstar. In New York City, novice East German cabbie Helmut Grokenberger (Armin Mueller-Stahl) has difficulty working the foot pedals to his hack, and his passenger, YoYo (Giancarlo Esposito), ends up driving himself to Brooklyn, picking up the shrill-voiced Angela (Rosie Perez) along the way. In Paris, an African cab driver (Isaach De Bankolé) ejects a collection of drunken African diplomats from his cab and picks up a beautiful but surly blind girl (Béatrice Dalle). In Rome, cab driver Gino (Roberto Benigni) engages in a heartfelt monologue confessing his past sexual exploits to his passenger, a priest who is dying of a heart attack in the back seat. The film winds down in the last melancholy vignette, taking place in Helsinki, as taxi driver Mika (Matti Pellonpää) picks up three inebriated workmen who regale him with hard-luck stories. But Mika has a much harsher story of his own to tell. ~ Paul Brenner, Rovi
