An ex-boxer whose career in the ring was cut tragically short trains his son in hopes that the boy will fulfill his abbreviated legacy in this sports drama from director Anil Sharma. Baldev Choudhary (Dharmendra) was once a formidable force in the ring, but a financial crunch forced the fighter to sacrifice his dream in the name of family. While Baldev's son Angad (Sunny Deol) seemed poised to achieve the feats only dreamt of by his father, his career too is unexpectedly cut short. When an aspiring pugilist looking to make a name for himself on a popular boxing show requests that Baldev train him for the big event, it begins to appear as if Baldev has gotten a second chance at stardom. Baldev's dreams are hopelessly dashed, however, when the young fighter ditches him for a more experienced coach just before the show goes to air. Though Baldev's other son Karan (Bobby Deol) is on the verge of a successful music career, family comes first for the devoted boy and he agrees to take up boxing instead. But even after Karan has achieved world fame in the ring, the question of whether his embittered father and brooding brother can truly let go of the past leaves all involved facing an uncertain future. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

Directed by Guddu Dhanoa, this film chronicles the life and eventual martyrdom of Indian revolutionary Bhagat Singh. Singh (Bobby Deol), who grew up in an impoverished neighborhood, didn't truly grasp the concept of freedom fighting until his uncle was forced to flee from the British military. The carnage inflicted by the British upon a local village caused Singh to vow to spend his life fighting agasint them. While attending college, an eager Singh joins the non-cooperation movement originated by Mahatma Gahndi in 1921, but becomes disillusioned. After deciding that action was required, Singh leaves his mother and joins the revolutionary party of Chandrashekhar Azad (Sunny Deol). After participating in the oftentimes violent boycott movement, both Singh and Azad are arrested by British authorities on March 23rd, 1931. ~ Tracie Cooper, All Movie Guide

Joshilaay is a bitter pill to take for anyone who thinks that Indian movies consist chiefly of Satyajit Ray epics and lighthearted musicals. Popular Indian film personality Anil Kapoor doesn't make his entrance until after half the cast has been murdered. The culprits are a pair of out-of-control criminals, played by Kulbhusan Kharbanda and Rajesh Vivek. Kapoor and Sunny Deol, the sons of two of the victims, wait many years to exact their revenge. The question: was it worth the wait? ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Sunny was one of three RKO Radio Broadway-musical adaptations tailored to the talents of British favorite Anna Neagle by her soon-to-be-husband Herbert Wilcox (the other two were No No Nanette and Irene). The story has been updated a bit and transposed to New Orleans' Mardi Gras, but remains at base a "Cinderella" yarn, replete with a poor girl/rich boy romance. Circus entertainer Sunny Sullivan (Neagle) falls in love with Larry Warren (John Carroll), wealthy scion of an auto-manufacturing family. Accepting his invitation to meet his family at a fancy weekend party, Sunny elects to hide the fact that she's in (horrors!) show business. Just as she's won over the entire family, who should arrive but her circus cohorts, immediately blowing her cover. The shamefaced Sunny returns to the big top, but Larry will not be dissuaded from his intention to make her his bride. The film is at its best when the talented Anna Neagle trades steps with loose-limbed dancer Ray Bolger. A more faithful (but less enjoyable) version of this Otto Harbach-Oscar Hammerstein II-Jerome Kern musical was made in 1930, with the original "Sunny" Marilyn Miller repeating her Broadway role. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
