On the eve of her seventh birthday, little Amanda Meyer (Arlen Aguayo-Stewart) bears witness to the gory spectacle of her parents' murder. So traumatized is Amanda that she is struck mute, unable to communicate in any manner, though she does demonstrate affection towards her favorite doll. Though now under the care of her aunt and tutor Dr. Julia Kerbridge (Catherine Mary Stewart), Amanda is still not out of danger, thanks to sinister figures who intend to get their hands on her doll -- and to extract the valuable corporate secrets for which her parents were killed. Meanwhile, Julia begins to have her doubts about the sincerity of her handsome and convivial neighbor, Kevin Finney (Rob Lowe). Evidently inspired by the 1967 Audrey Hepburn vehicle Wait Until Dark, the made-for-cable Dead Silent debuted over the Lifetime channel on March 27, 2000 -- ironically the same night that ABC offered the premiere of the TV biopic The Audrey Hepburn Story. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

This action film concerns Jim Paradine (Miles O'Keeffe), a stressed-out Miami Beach policeman who goes to the mountains to visit his friend Eli (Frank Fontaine), a local cop. While he's there, Paradine runs into the gang of crooks who murdered his family two years before and left him for dead. Peter Colvey and Jason Cavalier are the homicidal brothers, and Lynne Adams is their lesbian sister. The gang swipes a $2 million payroll from mountain loggers and kills a lot of people (including Eli), only to have the vengeful, crossbow-toting Paradine and local sheriff Mantee (Fred Williamson) come after them. A snowmobile flies off a mountain, a man dangling from a cliff is blown up with a grenade, and the film is packed with enough violence and nudity to satisfy genre fans, despite a somewhat lacklustre leading turn by O'Keeffe (Tarzan, the Ape Man). ~ Robert Firsching, All Movie Guide

Donald Sutherland stars as a mad scientist in this made-for-television sci-fi thriller. CIA agent Jessica Saunders (Mimi Kuzyk) has been assigned to work in the lab of scientist Dr. Maclean (Sutherland) to gather information. Unlike most teen horror movies, Brainscan relies more on atmosphere and plot than gore and bloodsoaked effects. Edward Furlong plays Michael, a 16-year-old horror movie fan, computer whiz, and misfit who responds to an ad for Brainscan, an CD-ROM virtual reality game that promises to "interface with your unconscious." Once involved with the game, Michael dreams that he brutally stabs a stranger and slices off his foot -- only to awaken and find the foot in his refrigerator. Out of Michael's computer comes Trickster (T. Ryder Smith), a sardonic, malevolent creation who advises Michael to keep playing new editions of Brainscan to evade capture by a suspicious cop (Frank Langella). With a death count that is relatively low and mostly offscreen (amputated feet notwithstanding), Brainscan doesn't make up for its lack of onscreen violence with a particularly original script, although it should be commended for not taking the easy way out. ~ Don Kaye, All Movie Guide

Produced for the HBO Cable service, Act of Vengeance reenacts the 1969 murder of United Mine Workers leader Jock Yablonski. Yablonski (Charles Bronson) virtually writes his own death warrant when, after a "safe" mine collapses and 80 miners are killed, he rebels against the incumbent UMW boss Tony Boyle (Wilford Brimley) to campaign for presidency of the union. Boyle gets the word out that one less Yablonski in the world would be preferable. Yablonski is depicted as being fully aware of the danger he faces in challenging Boyle--and is supported in his decision by his courageous wife (Ellen Burstyn). This TV-movie was based on a true story of criminal culpability in the ecological crisis. Alan Arkin stars as an ex-convict hired in 1972 by smooth-talking Armand Assante, who runs a successful garbage disposal business. Even when Arkin finds out that Assante is a functionary of the mob, he chooses to look the other way and count his money. But within six years, it is obvious that the toxic waste dumped by Assante's firm is destroying the atmosphere. Arkin becomes an FBI informant--only to discover how deeply ingrained and how high up the social and political scale the corruption really is. In this third installment of the slapstick comedy series about novice police officers with less than dubious abilities, two police academies have to compete with each other in order to stay in business. The state's skinflint governor claims he has less money to spread around, so one of the police training academies is going to be axed. Commandant Lassard (George Gaynes) calls back some of his former recruits to train the new batch of students, hoping to get the edge on the rival academy. Among the newcomers are brassy Cadet Zed (Bobcat Goldthwait), who is a former gang leader, and his roommate Cadet Sweetchuck (Tim Kazurinsky). Sweetchuck is a wimpy noodle whose Clint Eastwood impersonation is one of the film's most honestly funny moments. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide
