Following up his debut, Young Einstein (1988), Yahoo Serious wrote, directed and starred in this broad comedy as the titular hero, a modern-day, fictional descendant of a real-life Australian Robin Hood, Ned Kelly. Carrying on the family tradition of stealing from the rich and giving to the poor, Ned crosses the wealthy Sir John (Hugo Weaving), who arranges the sale of Kelly's coastal property to a Japanese buyer. Forbidden by the Kelly family code of honor from stealing to profit himself, the motorcycle-riding Ned decides to raise the money needed to save his lands by going to America. Stateside, his bank robbery scheme falls through, but he finds stardom as the lead in a Hollywood motion picture that might give him the money to foil Sir John's greedy plans. A young woman makes a difficult choice and becomes an adult in this Australian melodrama. The young woman is Meg, a small-town girl who has fallen in love with Sam. Their relationship is threatened when Sam decides to head for the big city to work on his career, and she elects to stay in familiar surroundings. After Sam leaves, she finds herself involved with Sam's buddy, Johnny. The trouble really begins when Sam abruptly returns during the town's Anzac Day celebrations. He tries to woo her back, but she publicly rejects Sam. Despite this, Meg is also not sure she wants to stay with Johnny even though a rumor is circulating that she and he are to be married. She is further tempted by Peg, a local waitress with a reputation, who wants Meg to forget about the two suitors and head for the city with her where they can both find better lives. Meanwhile Sam and Johnny have become arch rivals as they vie for her affection. The bored townsfolk continually egg them on. The rivalry climaxes with a dangerous car chase which ends in a draw. The Australian Highest Honor is comparatively little-known outside its country of origin, which is a shame. Set during World War II, the film details the unusual relationship between an Australian army captain and his captor, a Japanese security officer. The war has made these kindred spirits "enemies," and we, like the protagonists, are never allowed to forget the seriousness of the world conflict. Still, we are shown how even the exigencies of war cannot completely snuff out such qualities as honor and decency. John Howard plays Captain Robert Page, while Astuo Nakamura co-stars as Winoyu Tamira. Highest Honor is based on a true story. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
