For this 1991 action comedy from Hong Kong, director John Woo took a break from his ultraviolent thrillers; it was made a year after Bullet in the Head, and a year before Hard-Boiled. Chow Yun-Fat, Leslie Cheung, and Cherie Chung portray a trio of orphans who have grown to become art thieves. When their foster father (Kenneth Tsang), a powerful crime boss, forces them into stealing a painting, they pull off the job but are double-crossed. To get even, the trio plans a heist to steal the painting back. The three lead characters are funny and romantic; they're daring art thieves in the tradition of "The Cat" from To Catch a Thief or The Pink Panther, and the film evokes the same cosmopolitan feel. Once a Thief is far less bloody than Woo's gangster pictures, but in this film, the burglary sequences possess all the astounding grace of his other films' gunfights. ~ Jonathan E. Laxamana, Rovi

Acclaimed Hong Kong director Ann Hui spins this crime drama about Chinese immigrants struggling to get ahead in Japan. Ben (Andy Lau) is a Chinese student with a fiery temper who is making a go at working as a tour guide. One day he meets fellow student Meng Tieh-lan (Cherie Chung). He immediately falls for her but she is simply not interested. When Tieh-lan's visit sponsor starts demanding physical favors in return, she returns into the arms of a yakuza named Asano, who is not only wanted by the cops but also by his fellow gangsters. When his former comrades do nab him, he gives Tieh-lan a tape and tells her to give it to Ishikawa (Yasuaki Kurota), the boss to a rival gang. The tape contains evidence that Asano's boss double-crossed and then killed Ishikawa's boss in a drug deal years ago. With no one else to turn to, Tieh-lan gets Ben to help her drop off the tape and flee Japan. ~ Jonathan Crow, Rovi

Action flick auteur Ringo Lam directs this crime thriller loosely based on Peter Weir's 1985 classic Witness. Lau (Chow Yun-fat), along with his partner, Nam (Tommy Wong Kwang-leung), are investigating a band of gun runners when they get caught in a shoot out that kills their lead suspect and leaves the suspect's three-yea-old daughter Ka-ka parentless. Lau eventually tracks down the child's family in a remote country farm in Hong Kong's New Territories run by Cher (Cherie Cheung Cho-hung). Though initially the two loath each other, soon they start to warm to one another. Cher tells him that Ka-ka is the illegitimate child of crime boss Hung (Paul Chun Pui). When Lau confronts Hung, the cop promptly gets his clock cleaned and psychotic Vietnamese gangster Bullet (Roy Cheung Yiu-yueng) is sent out to whack him. Bullet's first attempt goes poorly, resulting in a trashed bar and a wounded hit man. Bullet vows bloody revenge. Meanwhile, Cher's thuggish husband Leong returns from mainland China about the same time that Bullet is about to stage a second attack. ~ Jonathan Crow, Rovi

Hong Kong filmmaker Johnny To directed this all-star holiday comedy, another in a string of popular Lunar New Year entertainments for actor/producer Raymond Wong, who engineered the similar All's Well, Ends Well series. As usual, the plot line is just an excuse for a series of amusing cameos and comic routines, but provides a number of laughs as it tells the story of three brothers, the mincingly effeminate Fang Chien-lang (Chow Yun-fat), cartoonist Chien-sang (Jacky Cheung), and their middle-aged older sibling, Chien-hui (Wong). Chien-lang romances both a stewardess (Carol Cheng) and a hedonistic department store saleswoman (Cherie Chung) who has a boyfriend (Lawrence Cheng); Chien-sang falls for a jogger named Ying-ying (Fennie Yuen); and Chien-hui romances a Chinese opera singer (Petrina Fung) whom he isn't aware is the same person who has been crank-calling him. As a result of some telephone problems, all three brothers experience some wild ups and downs in their respective relationships before finally attaining romantic bliss following a climactic opera performance involving all the main characters. As with Wong's other holiday films, genre aficionados will have a field day spotting familiar faces, including Karl Maka and Teddy Robin Kwan in the audience, and City on Fire director Ringo Lam as Fung's husband. ~ Robert Firsching, Rovi

A quartet of women become cabaret hostesses in hopes of building a better future for themselves in this intensely personal drama from director Michael Mak. Despite the fact that she comes from a broken home, May (Maggie Cheung) cares deeply for her mother and takes the job in hopes that she can provide the support that her ailing mother desperately needs. Little does she know the job will also find her involved in an impossible romance. Gigi (Cherie Chung) accepts the job in hopes of bailing her husband out of jail, though the happiness she hoped to find with him upon his release is short-lived when he embarks on an extramarital affair. A veteran hostess, Porsche (Do Do Cheng), is disheartened when an old flame reappears, though his intentions are far from the future she had in mind. Finally, Margarita (Hu Ching) may have the reputation as an ice princess, though few people can see the true beauty that lies deep within her tough exterior. In our journey through the lives of these four lost souls, we witness their journey to where they are today, and get a glimpse of what may come of them in the near future. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

A good example of the Hong Kong predilection for slapping together a film as a pastiche of successful elements from other films, this Cinema City production from director Po-Chih Leong credits five different screenwriters. Leslie Cheung stars as Chi Ken-wing (or "Chicken Wing" as he is sometimes referred to), who meets a beautiful and mysterious young woman named Cecilia (Cherie Chung). When Cecilia disappears, Wing does some digging and determines that she was probably a ghost. Of course, she really isn't a ghost at all, but merely playing dead in order to keep Wing from getting hurt by her violently jealous boyfriend, Sam (Melvin Wong). Naturally, Wing pursues her anyway and gets beaten up, but the two fall in love and begin seeing each other, leading Sam to pursue more drastic measures. Philip Kwok co-stars with Ann Bridgewater and David Wu. ~ Robert Firsching, Rovi

Mabel Chueng directs this wildly popular romantic comedy featuring Chow Yun-fat. With two years worth of savings and starry-eyed ambitions of being an actor, Jennifer Lee (Cherie Chung) leaves her comfortable home in Hong Kong for more modest digs in New York City, above the abode of her bumptious cousin, Figurehead (Chow). When her effete longtime boyfriend, Vincent (Danny Chan), dumps her and heads for Boston, Jennifer is left thunderstruck and deeply lonely. Figurehead goes all out to cheer up his pretty relative by buying her Broadway tickets and redecorating her apartment. Soon he finds himself falling for the lass though he is self-conscious about his humble upbringing, compulsive gambling, and coarse ways. Jennifer loves being around Figurehead but cannot imagine being married to him. Things get worse for the earthy protagonist when Vincent returns to New York, hoping to patch things up. ~ Jonathan Crow, Rovi

This slapstick comedy drama stars three of Hong Kong's most attractive and popular actresses of their time: Brigitte Lin is the daughter of a general, Cherie Chung is a petty thief, and Sally Yip is the daughter of the manager of the Beijing Opera theater. The story is set in 1911 when the Chinese revolution overthrew the monarchy and established a republic. The general's daughter has to steal an important document from her father's safe in order to help out the guerrillas who are fighting for the republic. Her exploits and those of her two friends flow back and forth between the Imperial Palace and the theater of the Beijing Opera. In order to flush out the thief, the introverted son poses as Lolantho's chauffeur - and in that guise, the two come across a pair of gorgeous women they met in Waikiki (Cherie Chung and Maggie Cheung - both former Miss Hong Kong title holders). One of the more noteworthy Hong Kong horror-comedies of its time, this period thriller from Golden Harvest and actor/director Wu Ma (who co-stars as Ma Lucho) is filled with both fascinating mythology and outrageous setpieces. Co-screenwriter Sammo Hung stars as Fatboy, who becomes suspicious when his best friend's death is listed as being due to natural causes. Adding to Fatboy's doubts is the fact that his late friend Ma Lucho's wife is now pregnant, and Ma was well-known to be impotent. Fatboy decides to conduct his own after-hours autopsy to prove that Ma was murdered, not knowing that his friend has actually faked his own death so he could sell all of the valuable treasures bequeathed to him by his late father. Just as Fatboy is about to hack the possum-playing Ma open with a meat cleaver, he is interrupted by a priest, sparing his devious friend. The respite is only temporary, however, as the treasures turn out to be junk, fronts for the real fortune which Ma's wife will inherit when she gives birth to an heir. Realizing that she is better off as a sole beneficiary, Ma's wife conspires with the priest to have her husband killed. Ma goes from playing dead to really being dead, but then rises from the grave as a ghost and ends up possessing Fatboy in order to further his campaign of revenge. The ensuing confrontations and their consequences for Fatboy's discorporated spirit result in a rousing conclusion. It's also a peculiar one -- at one point, Fatboy's soul ends up inside the body of a beetle, which his girlfriend Yuen (Cherie Chung) protects from the demons sent to escort it to hell by hiding it in a feminine napkin. Lam Ching-ying and Chung Fat co-star. ~ Robert Firsching, Rovi
