Michael Hui both directed and stars in this entertaining comedy as an inventive, plucky musician. He overhears some gangsters plotting a murder in an alleyway and when he is caught, he tries to fake blindness to escape with his life (and limbs) intact. Ultimately, the hapless musician is rescued by his roommate, a female band member. He ends up tagging along on a trip to Bangkok with her all-girl band. After arriving in Bangkok with this bevy of musicians, the young man begins to fall for one of them. But as he soon finds out, romantic life never develops in a flawless straight line. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

Jim (Tom Poon), Cat (Kitty Wai), and Fatty (Fo-fo Mar) are trying to find a way to realize their dreams, though none are trying very hard, in this fairly run-of-the-mill drama set in modern Hong Kong. Jim wants to be a fashion designer but is more devoted to discos than the drawing board, his lover Cat is pregnant and wants an abortion, and his friend Fatty works in a pizza place. All three think America offers better opportunities to get ahead, but a traumatic visit to the American Embassy puts any idea of travel to the States on indefinite hold. Left with very few choices, the trio begins to look toward the wrong side of the law for new ways to make a quick Hong Kong dollar -- without clearly seeing the pitfalls involved. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

The time is the late 1930s and a pending war with the Japanese forms a part of the epic setting for a fashionable and old-fashioned love affair between a once-wealthy widow and divorcée (Cora Miao) newly arrived in Hong Kong and a rich Chinese playboy educated at Cambridge. The epic treatment of their romance is provided by background music in the form of Chinese opera or contemporary love songs and dazzling, opulent settings along the seashore or in tourist spots. The gloss and glitter dominate but cannot hide the flaws in the plot or eliminate the moments of wooden acting. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi
