The tenuous nature of life and politics in Eastern Europe provides the underpinnings for this drama from Turkish filmmaker Omer Kavur. Ahmet (Talat Bulut) is a journalist who takes a working holiday in Turkey, where he plans to work on a series of photos of buildings that have fallen into disuse. While dining in a cafe, Ahmet sees a group of men he believes are up to no good; he follows them to a remote area and discovers they've come to execute a man. Ahmet snaps some photos of the murder, and when he's found out, the thugs threaten Ahmet's life (as well as that of his travelling companion) if he doesn't hand over the film. While this incident is being played out in Ahmet's mind, he encounters Arzuhum (Hande Ataizi), a beautiful woman who claims her father instigated the killing. A romance quickly grows between Ahmet and Arzuhum, but Ahmet still has a number of unanswered questions when the woman disappears. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

The life of a modern ecological saint is presented in this Turkish bio-pic. The tale begins just after the War of Independence in the mountainous town of Manisa, western Turkey. The Christ-like Ahmet wanders to town, plants a sprig, and waters it. Later he frees a mountain stream to help the drought-stricken community below. Eventually Ahmet, wearing only a pair of shorts, and sporting a wild beard, moves into the mountains where he lives for close to 40 years before becoming overwhelmed by the encroachment of civilization. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi

When he meets the young widow Ayse, the woman and her young son move in with Hasan. Ayse willingly enters into prostitution, but Hasan is comforted by the company of the young boy who shares his alienation. ~ Dan Pavlides, Rovi

Sehmus comes from a poor village in Anatolia and has traveled to Istanbul to do some construction work under the leadership of a fellow villager who made the move earlier. However, his real dream is to become a singer, following in the footsteps of someone else from his village of Urfa who hit the big time. In this melodrama, the men working on big buildings share accommodations (a shack on the building site) and camaraderie, while attempting to help Sehmus fulfill his big dream. Alas, when he and his foreman buddy bet all their chips on a rigged talent contest, the consequences are tragic for all concerned. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

In this well-photographed drama from director Serif Goren, a young Turkish widow (Hulya Kocyigit) lives near the Greek border and goes to work in the rice fields after her husband is murdered. She tries to make a living for herself and her young son, ignoring the male workers who obviously lust after her in spite of the fact she is newly widowed. This standard story of a woman's ill-fated existence starts when she stabs her loser, common-law husband to death after she discovers he has been married to another woman all along. Ayse (Hulya Koxyigit) gets thrown in jail for her crime, but following the maxim that a prisoner's first duty is to escape, she seduces one of the guards and through his complicity is soon out and free and eventually working as a cook in a mining camp. There she starts a liaison with the foreman of the mine and just when life seems to have settled down a little, the prison guard shows up and she has to get out of there fast. Her objective is to reach her two daughters -- still a dangerous choice because she is a hunted woman, and the police are well aware of her family connections.

In an uneven but visually evocative drama, Turkish director Serif Goren captures the story of Muruvvet (Hulya Kocyigit), a midwife who is traveling from the city of Ankara to work at a medical center in a remote town. The season is winter, and when her bus is trapped by accumulating snow, she is forced to find shelter with a local family. In the morning, she tries to leave again but it is hopeless -- the snow has become too deep. Muruvvet decides to spend the winter in the village, partly because of the impossible roads and partly because she has become attracted to Sehmuz (Tarik Akan), a man hunted by the police for killing the murderer of his wife and children. Muruvvet and Sehmuz are aware that the police may catch up with him one day -- and so their relationship and decisions have an added stress that will have to eventually be resolved. For the rest of the film, events and plot twists are not as well scripted as in the first half, although the photography and acting is excellent throughout. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

Social injustice is a common theme in dramas in which the problems of a village mentality are highlighted by savvy filmmakers -- like Turkish director Ali Ozgenturk. Here he tells the story of Hazal, a young woman who is widowed soon after she marries. By tradition she is controlled by her former in-laws and has neither independence nor her own family to come to her aid. As a result, the in-laws expect her to marry her dead husband's twelve-year-old brother. In the meantime, a young man has fallen in love with her and she reciprocates his feelings. He is also working on a road that would make contact with the world outside the village a lot easier. Soon the symbolism of the road and the young couple who tradition could never allow to marry are intertwined. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi
