Though director William Wellman was attached to the Lafayette Flying Corps during WW1, many people believed that he was actually with the celebrated Lafayette Escadrille, and this 1958 actioner does little to dispel that belief. The film concentrates on a group of courageous young American aviators who, long before the USA's entry into the Great War, band together to fight the minions of the Kaiser in the skies of France. One of these reckless flyboys is Thad Walker (Tab Hunter), who arrives in Paris after being thrown out of his wealthy father's home. Joining the Escadrille with Walker are fellow expatriates Tom Hitchcock (Jody McCrea), Duke Sinclaire (David Janssen) and "Wild Bill" Wellman (played by the director's son, Bill Wellman Jr.). After a bit of parlez-vous with the local mademoiselles, Walker and his pals take to the air, and at this point, the film really gets off the ground (no pun intended). The spectacular aerial sequences are evocative of those in Wellman's silent classic Wings, though Lafayette Escadrille itself falls a bit short of classic status. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

James Garner stars as WWII hero Major William Darby in this characteristically gusty William Wellman combat film. Darby organizes a highly-trained group of rangers, to be deployed in behind-the-lines activities in Italy and Northern Africa. The first portion of the film details the training, with time out for a few comic and romantic interludes; the second part shows Darby's Rangers in full, ferocious action. In addition to Garner, Warner Bros. used Darby's Rangers to spotlight another of its TV stars, Edd "Kookie" Byrnes; Bill Wellman Jr. also shows up in the supporting role of Eli Clatworthy. The film was adapted from the book by Major James Altieri. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Toute la Ville Accuse (The Whole Town Accuses) unfolds the tale of writer François Nerac (Jean Marais), who sets up camp in a small village so he can work in peace. Through a series of unfortunate coincidences, Nerac finds himself in possession of a bagful of stolen money. Hoping to get rid of the loot in a hurry, he donates the cash to charity -- which immediately arouses the suspicion of the villagers who peg the stranger as a thief. Filmed on an obviously tight budget, Toute la Ville Accuse is the sort of "small" movie that grabs attention immediately and refuses to let go until the final shot. The film represents the impressive directorial debut of Claude Boissol, whose career surprisingly never really took off. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Les Fruits de L'Ete (Fruits of Summer) serves as a vehicle for the venerable Edwige Feuillere. The thinnish storyline is little more than a series of romantic misunderstandings, each one sillier than the last. Throughout, the characters try to observe the correct social proprieties despite all the chaos occurring around them. Towards the end, the film takes a dramatic turn, but the audience is assured that all will turn out well. The bulk of the amorous complications are handled by Etchika Choureau as a frisky young lass and Claude Nicot as her collar-ad suitor. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Director Michelangelo Antonioni's unique triptych film features three murders, one taking place in Paris, another in Rome, and another in London. All of the perpetrators are affluent youths, each killing for his own dubious motive. In the France segment, a group of adolescents kill for money, even though they don't need it; in the London segment, a poet uncovers a woman's body and tries to profit from the discovery; and in the Italian segment, a student becomes caught up in a smuggling ring, with deadly results. Though each crime is investigated, the guilty are rarely singled out for their actions. I Vinti had a protracted production schedule, due in large part to the director's inability to find funding for such ambitious, resolutely downbeat material. ~ Michael Hastings, All Movie Guide
