In this thriller, after Peter unintentionally foils a rapist while jogging in Stockholm so that the man is sent to prison, he writes a book about his experience, but then thinks no more about it. The rapist, on the other hand, is consumed by a desire for revenge. When Peter travels to a remote northern house in the winter to finish another of his books, the criminal follows and rapes Peter's wife at gunpoint while he looks on helplessly, and then escapes. When Peter and his devastated family return to Stockholm, the rapist is there too, and it becomes more than he can do to stop him from striking again. Anna, a fortyish librarian who is recently divorced, goes on a date with Martin, a middle-aged perpetual bachelor. After a little sexual groping, she is ready to call it quits. Instead, he rapes her. As she recovers from her shock over the incident, she contemplates what would constitute a similarly invasive humiliation for a man, asking herself the question, "can a man be raped [by a woman]?" Donning a good disguise, she begins to stalk Martin, causing him considerable discomfiture. She even causes him to lose a bowling tournament. After enough of this, she abducts him at gunpoint just before a party he is giving, takes him back to his apartment, and ties him in a humiliating posture on his bed, leaving his front door unlocked when she departs. They neck and are physically affectionate in public as well as in private, but have a big taboo against sexual consummation. Their situation drives them to distraction, and they unsuccessfully seek various extramarital outlets for their frustrations.
