A middle-aged woman who gives her young lover his freedom is surprised when he begins seeing someone much like herself in this psychological drama from filmmakers Patrick Mario Bernard and Pierre Trividic. Anne-Marie (Dominique Blanc) is an attractive woman in her mid-forties who makes her living as a social worker and keeps an eye on an elderly woman with a drinking problem, Madame Schneider (Anne Benoit). Anne-Marie has been dating Alex (Cyril Guei), a man nearly twenty years her junior, but while he's eager to make a commitment, she isn't interested in marriage or a long-term affair. Anne-Marie gently breaks off their relationship, urging Alex to play the field a bit, and they remain friends. But Anne-Marie's feelings change when she learns that Alex has found a new girlfriend -- and she's the same age as Anne-Marie. Alex doesn't want to tell Anne-Marie much about his new lover, which makes her all the more eager to know everything about her, and before long Anne-Marie is consumed by jealousy, slowly sinking into madness as she obsesses over a woman who seems very much like herself. Dominique Blanc's performance in L'Autre earned her Best Actress honors at the 2008 Venice Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

As co-directed by Xavier Brillat, Pierre Trividic and Patrick Mario Bernard, the offbeat drama Dancing concerns a hermitic gay artist named Rene Bernard (played by director Patrick Bernard) who spends all of his time living and creating new artwork in an ornate ballroom by the French seaside. His only companion is his lover Patric (Trividic) - a belletrist suffering from extreme writer's block. Rene's days progress satisfactorily until Patric leaves for a lengthy vacation; left to fend for himself, Rene falls increasingly out of touch with reality - he initially fixates over a creepy photograph of two clowns that hangs in the facility, then becomes convinced that a spirit is haunting him. ~ Nathan Southern, All Movie Guide

In this slow-paced thriller set just before D-Day in Paris, Gus Lang (Ed Harris) is an American agent who has to make sure a captured U.S. officer is not forced to divulge the secret of the Normandy invasion. Since audiences know the invasion worked, the success of Gus Lang's espionage forays into Nazi officialdom, and the French resistance appears to be a foregone conclusion. At least Paris provides an excellent backdrop for his undercover work, both with the attractive Claire Jouvet (Cyrielle Claire) and the less-attractive Nazi military. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

Bearing traces of the old Anton Chekhov play The Wedding, The Contract is set during an "arranged" ceremony. The bride and groom barely know each other, but this matters not at all to their tradition-bound families. At the last minute, the bride balks. Only slightly nonplused, the groom's father, a status-seeking doctor, decides to go ahead with the expensive reception anyway. Polish director Krzysz Zanussi uses this scenario to stick it to capitalist corruption, and to society's destruction of the individual spirit. Leslie Caron, the one recognizable member of the cast, is outstanding as a wealthy, over-the-hill ballerina who happens to be a kleptomaniac. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

British writer Jerrard Tickell's operetta-style Hussar Honeymoon was made into a Danish comedy by veteran director Annelise Reenberg, an old hand at this sort of thing. Unfortunately, 1970 was a little late in the game for stories of mistaken identity and romantic escapades involving gaily dressed lieutenants and the inevitable minister's naughty daughters. The two horse-guard lieutenants of the tale must prove their manhood by drinking untold cases of champagne, riding 40 kilometers through the pretty Danish countryside and have 2 romantic encounters along the way, all in the span of a single night. The minister's daughters are identical twins (both of them played by Susse Wold), which the film-makers apparently thought was hilarious. It wasn't. In fact, Hurra for de BlÄ Husarer was rather too tame for 1970, a time in history when censorship had all but disappeared in Denmark. ~ Hans J. Wollstein, All Movie Guide
