Though he is near death, blind Rene, an elderly Italian-French intellectual, continues to make his annual conference abroad accompanied by his self-centered loyal, beautiful assistant Sibilla who may or may not be his lover. Rene's domineering mother strongly disapproves of Sibilla and his continual galavanting, but Rene disregards her and goes anyway. While in Spain, Sibilla falls for a handsome young toreador who also captures the interest of Rene, though it is hard to say whether his feelings for the bullfighter are fatherly or more romantic. It is also unclear as to whether Sibilla and the bullfighter are lovers either. Thus an enigmatic romantic triangle forms until Rene and Sibilla suddenly decide to wed. The character of Rene seems to be closely patterned after Argentine writer Jorge Luis Borges. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide
This romantic comedy is set upon Italy's beautiful Lake Como just before WW II erupted in Europe. British, middle-aged, but still-attractive Miss Bentley has come to the lake to visit the family resort. The place has changed since she was there last and there is only one other Britisher there, the single, handsome Major Winslow, a wealthy industrialist. He and she engage in a few rounds of tennis, and begin a tentative romance that is interrupted when flirtatious American-upstart Miss Beaumont shows up and begins toying catlike, with the affections of the vulnerable major. An off-beat, entertaining comedy about a married couples' ennui, this story has a special Italian flavor that others can savor as well. A husband and his wife (Riccardo Pazzaglia, also the director, and Simona Marchini) have become completely bored with each other after many, many routine years of marriage and raising their teenage son. They would like to get a divorce, but can't afford to pay rent separately, so their lawyers create a solution to their problem. They are to divide everything in the house in half, from the bed to the refrigerator, and live as though they really were separate. The headboard of the bed is sawed in half, the food in the fridge is divided, and so life apart but together begins. Problems constantly arise, until the two are forced to rethink and retrench. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide
