People in a small Yugoslavian village anticipate the changes in their lives following World War II in this black comedy. The government gives tempting promises for the future, but the people are still dependant on the local landowner for survival. The masses seem to embrace the revolution if they get enough meat and potatoes and a plot of land to call their own. One family weathers the political changes as the country moves from socialism to communism. ~ Dan Pavlides, All Movie Guide

This three-part historical epic of the lives and misfortunes of the Vrhunc family in the former Yugoslavia is divided into the years of 1914, 1924, and 1944. Since the film is a down-sized version of a longer episodic television presentation, that may account for some possible confusion in the story. In 1914, the wealthy Vrhunc patriarch owns valuable land and operates a lucrative mine. He is conservative and wants to hold on to the status quo, and so when the region breaks away from Hapsburg rule, he loses out. His wife, in the meantime, is a tragic figure who has an unhappy solution to her stifling existence with her husband and children. In part II, set in 1924, the fascists and communists are fighting for footholds among the population and in the government, and the Vrhunc family is torn apart because their own allegiances are divided between the two opposing extremes. In part III, the family suffers the most, as Nazi collaborators are rounded up and shot by Partisans, and chaos reigns.

The time is the 1920s in Slovenia and a young man leaves his studies in a Catholic seminary to become a musician, in spite of his mother's opposition. He ends up in a small band with his older cousins, playing at weddings to earn a living. When he meets a beautiful Hungarian woman at one wedding, he wastes no time in falling in love but is once again on the bad side of his mother -- it seems the young woman has a bad leg and the mother objects to her as a future daughter-in-law. Undaunted, the love-struck son continues with his plans, unaware that other obstacles are about to come crashing down on him. Specially created for a television series, this conventional romance is primarily directed at a Slovenian audience. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

This film is set in the early 20th century, when a couple and their five children are struggling to wrest a living from the swampy soil near the plains of Slovenia. They are poor, each member of the family has to toil long and hard to make ends meet, and what is worse, they are not welcomed by their neighbors, who call them "polecats." Their poverty can maim and kill: their milk cow has to be slaughtered when she gets terminally sick, one of the sons loses an eye in an accident, and the mother, exhausted from overwork, dies while she is pregnant for the sixth time. Her death puts the family dangerously close to losing their battle for survival, and the oldest son is forced to work for the neighbors in order to feed everyone. That is not the only tragedy that will strike the downtrodden family, and the young children know that between the antagonistic neighbors and the unforgiving land, it will be a long and arduous journey into adulthood. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

When the son of a Yugoslav family exiled in Argentina goes to Ljubljana to study at the university, he is confronted with something he could never face before: his father's record as a Nazi collaborator. When the son arrives at the university, the students who know about his parentage refuse to shake his hand, and he still avoids facing the truth until he becomes attracted to a young woman and realizes he has to know about this part of his family's history. A classmate then takes him to the church and shows him incontrovertible evidence of the atrocity committed there at the end of the war. Overwhelmed by the truth, he goes back to Argentina to get the full story from his uncle -- no matter what. He confronts his uncle at a garden party and does not give up hounding him until the man, drunk and beyond reason, tells the young man the story of the massacre. Bereft of his heritage by his father's complicity in that act, he searches for where to turn, where to go, to find a place where he belongs. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide
