The Brazilian Color of Destiny stars Guilherme Fontes as a tormented Rio de Janeiro teen. Fontes' family had fled Chile's repressive Pinochet regime, but not before his older brother was tortured and killed by the Chilean police. The boy's cousin Julia Lemmetz arrives in Rio, having herself escaped Chile for political reasons. Drawn to his activist cousin, Fontes joins her at an anti-Pinochet demonstration at the Chilean embassy. The two rebels storm the embassy and dump a can of red paint in the office of one of the diplomats. With this one act of defiance, Fontes is finally able to purge the guilt he's always felt over the death of his brother. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Sisters Selma (Gloria Pires), Regina (Andrea Beltrao), Laura (Paloma Duarte) and Lucia (Lilia Cabral) are the main characters in Daniel Filho's The Inheritance. The women have come together upon the death of their mother. All of the women are, at the very least, quirky. Married Selma appears to be the most "together" of the group, but an attraction to the man selling her mother's apartment, and the announcement that Selma's daughter is in a cult, alters her life. Laura is struggling with her sexual identity. Regina is estranged from her musician son. The sale of their mother's apartment leads to mounting tension between the sisters. ~ Perry Seibert, All Movie Guide

This vampire story by Brazilian director Ivan Cardoso is interspersed with humor and nuanced with a 1950s look. A group of young women are performing in a nightclub act called "The Seven Vampires" at a respectable and (apparently) prosperous hotel. While they are play-acting in the beginning, their roles take on another aura after a "killer vegetable" changes a scientist into a vampire. His affinity for the chorus girls threatens to make their vampire personas all the more realistic. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

In this stereotypical teen beach film from Brazil, a virile surfer is unhappy because his wife left him, and so he decides to head for the beaches of southern Brazil with a friend who is a rock star. When the two arrive for days of wind and surf, romance begins with a few young women -- but not without competition from obviously inferior rivals. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

In this Brazilian romantic comedy-drama, set in Rio, Luiza (Andrea Beltrao) meets researcher Gabriel (Daniel Dantas), who is involved in an unpleasant divorce. Although the two immediately hit it off, they soon encounter predictable problems. The title refers to the fact that the movie has been scripted into sequences arranged alphabetically, such as "R" for Revenge, while another gimmick has the film's main characters giving marital advice directly into the camera. Shown at 1997 film festivals (Vancouver, Sundance). ~ Bhob Stewart, All Movie Guide

Filmmaker Eduardo Coutinho walks the narrow line between reality and drama in this offbeat documentary. Coutinho placed a classified ad in a Brazilian newspaper looking for ordinary women who would be willing to discuss their lives on camera. After filming interviews with twenty-three subjects who responded, Coutinho narrowed his focus down to eight women, and then brought in five actresses to re-enact their stories on camera -- Andrea Beltrao, Lana Guelero, Marilia Pera, Mary Sheyla and Fernanda Torres. In Jogo de Cena (aka Playing), Coutinho cuts back and forth between interviews with the women who share their real-life stories and the actresses interpreting their monologues, discussing everything from their lives with their families to movies they've seen. Periodically, the actresses take a break from their roles to discuss their own perspectives on the project and the nature of their craft. Playing received its North American premiere at the 2008 Miami Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide
