Angélica Aragón Movies
A character actress most adept at playing Latina mothers, maids, physicians, and occasional businesswomen, Angélica Aragón officially took her Hollywood bow in the mid-'80s. Unfortunately, she found herself pigeonholed during her first foray into Tinseltown, landing a series of roles in low-budget programmers such as the teen action picture Toy Soldiers (1984) and the Charles Bronson actioner The Evil That Men Do (1984). This experience may have contributed to Aragón's decision to return to Spanish-language efforts, for during the following decade, she contributed almost exclusively to Mexican-produced pictures -- films such as En el Aire (1986), Lo del Cesar, and Pueblo de Madera. Though she would continue to maintain her foothold over the years as a south-of-the-border star, the actress did make a respectable return to Hollywood in A-list material with a small role in the 1995 Keanu Reeves/Anthony Quinn drama A Walk in the Clouds. Aragón's international crossover efforts included the 2002 Crime of Padre Amaro, the 2004 Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights, and the 2007 Bella, as the mother of international soccer star Jose (Eduardo Verástagui). ~ Nathan Southern, All Movie GuideAn Ouija board unleashes a wave of supernatural terror on an unsuspecting family. This second feature from writer-director Francisco Athie (Lolo) carries a stylish cyber-candescence throughout, courtesy of techno-twists added by production designer Chu Uroz (cables, surveillance cameras, TV monitors, and other electronic gear). Athie's tense politico-thriller begins with a trade-union chief's murder. His Brazilian mistress Claudia is framed, with bumbling Magana on as her defense lawyer and reporter Marco doing a journalistic investigation. As it becomes evident that both Magana and Marco are pawns and Claudia's innocent former lover is set up as the murderer, the web of intrigue expands. The world of Mexican hippies is explored in this interesting drama. The story moves between the present and the years 1969, and 1975. Alberto is an aging hippy who works at a radio station specializing in "classic rock." The film opens as he is having a bad day. His latest relationship is crumbling and his radio station is closing. He finds an old photograph and begins reminiscing about Laura, his first love, and about the life they lead in a primitive commune. As a young man, Alberto was forced by his parents to marry. He immediately burns his marriage certificate. He and Laura make love beneath a stage while a band plays "Purple Haze". Later he goes to a commune with Laura's best friend. He tries to have Laura simultaneously. Like many old flower-children, Alberto has never outgrown the Sixties. Like a cosmic gypsy, he wanders about chasing his ideals of happiness and freedom. This lavish retelling of the story of the Hebrew strong man and history's most famous lady barber was based in part on the Old Testament, in part on Eric Linkletter's book Husband of Delilah, and in great part on the same-named 1949 Cecil B. DeMille movie epic. Newcomer Anthony Hamilton stars as Samson, who uses his awesome strength--not to mention the jawbone of an ass--to safeguard his fellow Hebrews from the persecution of the Philistines in the 11th Century BC. Fascinated by Samson, Philistine harlot Delilah (Belinda Bauer) pretends to fall in love with him so that she may learn the source of his muscle power. Upon discovering that his mightiness stems from his flowing mane of hair, Delilah drugs Samson's wine and pulls out the shears. Bald and blinded, Samson is transformed from the savior of his people into an enslaved object of Philistine ridicule. But redemption is at hand, and by film's end practically the entire cast has been entombed in the rubble wrought by Samson's final, desperate feat of strength. Victor Mature, who of course played Samson in the 1949 film, was coaxed out of retirment to portray Samson's father, while Max Von Sydow, who Biblical-movie credits include the part of Jesus in The Greatest Story Ever Told, delivers an impressively subtle performance as the Philistine governor. Filmed in Mexico, Samson and Delilah originally aired April 1, 1984, on ABC. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

One of the more offensive, poorly scripted "comedies" to come out of Mexico in any era, the "hot Mexicans" of the title are sexually fixated men who either rape women, commit incest, practice adultery, or otherwise engage in supposedly comic expressions of their sexual urges. Roberto (Alfonso Zayas) is such an "accomplished" rapist that no victim presses charges against him and he symbolizes the ultimate goal for the rest of the men he knows. Next time, director and co-scripter (Gilberto Martinez-Solares) should aim a little higher, which should not be difficult at all. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

A priest discovers the path of virtue can be steep, and temptation can demand a heavy price, in this controversial drama from Mexico. Father Amaro (Gael Garcia Bernal) is a young Catholic priest whose mentor, the Bishop (Ernesto Gomez Cruz), expects great things from him. However, like all priests, Amaro must first be assigned where he is needed most, which leads him to the small rural community of Los Reyes, where Amaro is to assist Father Benito (Sancho Gracia). To his shock, Amaro discovers Benito is hardly following Holy Law -- he's having an affair with Sanjuanera (Angelica Aragon), a woman who runs a local restaurant, and he's been helping a drug dealer launder his profits in exchange for large donations to the church, which Benito feels is justified as the funds are being used to build a hospital and orphanage for the poor. Amaro is disgusted with Benito's actions, but he soon discovers his own weaknesses when he falls in love with Amelia (Ana Claudia Talancon), Sanjuanera's teenage daughter. As Amelia finds herself falling for Amaro, she breaks off her relationship with Ruben (Andres Montiel), a reporter. Ruben responds by publishing a story which reveals the details of Benito's dealings with the drug dealers; Benito in turn tries to lay the blame at the feet of noble Father Natalio (Damian Alcazar), whose work with local peasants has been wrongly interpreted as supporting armed revolutionary factions. As Amaro tries desperately to distance himself from the growing scandal, he receives shocking news from Amelia when he learns she's pregnant with his child. The Crime of Father Amaro's portrayal of corruption within the Catholic Church led to an outcry from Catholic organizations, both in Mexico and the United States, where they attempted to organize a boycott of the film. However, the tactic failed in Mexico, where the controversy helped to boost ticket sales, making it the highest-grossing Mexican film ever in its native country. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Moloch tortures and terrorizes the good guys and is protected by a misguided American government agency -- though nothing can stop Holland once he starts killing his way to the chief villain. Still reeling from the horrors of war, Paul wants to settle down and start a farm, but his wife Betty (Debra Messing), whom he met and impulsively married shortly before shipping out, has arranged for him to take a job as a salesman peddling chocolates. While taking a sales trip to another town, he befriends a beautiful but distraught young woman, Victoria Aragon (Aitana Sanchez-Gijon). While away at college, Victoria met and fell in love with a young man and soon became pregnant; however, when her boyfriend discovered she was expecting, he abandoned her. She returns home full of shame and fearful of her father's reaction. But Paul gets an idea -- he'll pose as her husband and leave after a day or two, so when she's left alone with the child, the disgrace will be on him, not her. Most of the Aragon family take to Paul readily enough, especially Grandfather Don Pedro (Anthony Quinn), but Victoria's father, Alberto (Giancarlo Giannini), senses something amiss between the young couple. A pair of scientists have their beliefs shaken while studying a holy relic in this inspirational drama. Jose Maria (Aleix Albareda) and his sister Mercedes (Ivana Miño) are archeologists who have been given a grant to study the story of Our Lady of Guadalupe, in which Juan Diego (José Carlos Ruiz), an ordinary man living near the hill of Tepeyac, saw a vision of the Virgin Mary in December of 1531. The apparition urged Juan to build a house of worship on the hill; he approached a bishop, Father Juan de Zumarraga, with the news of his vision, but the holy man was wary of Juan's story and demanded further proof. The Virgin returned to Juan and urged him to gather a bouquet of winter roses to present to the bishop; when he did, the petals fell on the bishop's apron, leaving behind an iconic portrait of the Virgin. Jose and Mercedes are eager to determine how much of this story has a basis in fact and how much is fiction; they travel to Tepeyac to study the artifacts of the legend firsthand, but their study has an impact upon them that neither had expected. Guadalupe was produced to coincide with the 475th anniversary of the Guadalupe apparition, and was created with the participation of leading members of the Mexican Catholic clergy. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

The romantic foibles of two young couples in Mexico -- whose professional success has not led to personal satisfaction -- forms the basis of this comedy with serious undertones. Carlos (Victor Hugo Martin) is a student of new age spirituality, while his wife Ana (Susana Zabaleta) is a good bit more interested in the pleasures of the flesh, leading to no small amount of conflict. Tensions increase when Tomas (Demián Bichir), an old friend of the couple and Ana's former lover, comes to pay an extended visit. Elsewhere in the neighborhood, Andrea (Cecilia Suarez) is angry with her husband Miguel (Jorge Salinas), who doesn't appear to put much stock in monogamy, and she's even more annoyed when he announces that his former girlfriend Maria (Monica Dionne), who has just left her husband, will be their house guest for a while. After a great deal of arguing and soul searching, a temporary agreement is reached between the two couples and their friends -- the men will stay in one apartment while the women will stay in another until cooler heads prevail.
