Russian Francesca Zaborszin (Natalya Andreichenko) is convinced that the United States is responsible for her father's death. Crazed for revenge, she has devised a system that scrambles the navigational controls of commercial airliners, causing them to crash without warning. After two major air disasters in as many days, Capt. Gordon Pruett (Bruce Payne), a United States Air Force fighter pilot, is called into action. It is discovered that Francesca's secret control system is based in a Middle Eastern terrorist complex; Pruett is ordered to bomb the facilities before more airliners can crash (and more innocent lives are lost), but he finds himself unable to carry out his orders when he discovers another American pilot is being held hostage at the base. The supporting cast includes Corbin Bernsen and Dennis Christopher. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

A somber portrait of organized crime and family trauma, Little Odessa centers on the trouble caused when hit man Joshua Shapira (Tim Roth) returns to his old neighborhood of Brighton Beach, Brooklyn. A hired killer for the Russian Mafia, Joshua is given an assignment in his hometown, where he renews contact with his younger brother Reuben (Edward Furlong) and an old flame (Moira Kelly). But others do not welcome Joshua's return, particularly his harsh, estranged father (Maximillian Schell), who had disowned Joshua years before and currently attempts to keep him from visiting his seriously ill mother (Vanessa Redgrave). The pressure of these family crises combine with Joshua's deepening involvement in the local crime scene, ultimately triggering a bloody confrontation. First-time director James Gray creates a solemn, oppressive atmosphere that emphasizes the already grim nature of his story. The slow pace and familiar crime narrative were attacked by many viewers, contributing to a mixed critical reaction, but Little Odessa nevertheless won admiration for Gray's visual sense and the skilled performance by Roth in the unsympathetic lead role. ~ Judd Blaise, All Movie Guide

Based on a novel by Nikolai Leskov (which also inspired Andrzej Wajda's 1964 feature A Siberian Lady Macbeth and a modernistic opera), the story concerns Katerina (Natalia Andreichenko), the disgruntled wife of a boorish merchant (Nikolai Pastukhov). When she falls in love with Sergei (Alexander Abdulov), Katerina inveigles the handsome youth into helping her murder her husband. Irony piles upon irony in the sturm-und-drang closing scenes. The title Lady Makbet Mitsenskovo Uezda literally translates to Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

In this melodrama, Masha (Natalia Anreischenko) is a research lab worker who throws her husband out of the house when she discovers he has a mistress. Her friends encourage her to attend parties in order to be sociable and to perhaps meet a new man. She goes home with a taxi driver, but she leaves suddenly when his wife returns unexpectedly. There are comic touches to this feature, but viewers should be warned of a brutal gang-rape scene. After her adventures, Masha considers reconciling with her wayward husband when he vows to give up his mistress. ~ Dan Pavlides, All Movie Guide

Sibiriada was controversial in the Soviet Union, but it received the Special Jury Prize at Cannes, the second most prestigious prize after the Palme d'Or. After making this film, director Mikhalkov-Konchalovsky moved to the West. In the story, the lives of two Siberian families lives are chronicled through three generations, beginning with the period just after the turn of the century, and carrying on through the '60s. Before the revolution, a poor boy is the same age as a girl from a rich family, who uses her family position to torment him. Meanwhile, his father has been building a "corduroy" wooden road into the forest. However, as the boy and girl grow up, they fall in love. Their union is forbidden by her family, and he is beaten by their henchmen and cast adrift at sea. During the Revolution, the girl flees her family, thinking to join her true love. Many years later, he returns to his village with his teenaged son, and discovers that the former rich girl was killed long ago. The teenaged boy, in turn, become a geological engineer, and returns to his father's village to look for oil. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide
