Based on a Swedish television series, this comedy considers the life of the hapless, hopelessly serious and infinitely clueless one-man natural disaster Kurt Olsson (mostly played by Lasse Brandeby) from his beginnings in his mother's womb up to the time when he becomes a father himself. While Kurt himself is humorously humorless in all his undertakings, his streetcar conductor father (also played by Brandeby) is quite simply a fanatic. The film features successive appearances by Kurt's TV partner Hans Wiktorsson as Arne Nystrom, also shown from birth to the "present." ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide
Walter (Kent Andersson) is a retired sailor and former boxer who meets a 13-year-old prostitute and drug addict (Ulrika Hansson) in this symbolic action drama. Moved by her plight, he complains to the local police about the problem of child prostitution and drug dealing in the area. When they do nothing to stop the problem, Walter recruits Carina (Eva Britt Strandberg), a veteran hooker with a heart of gold (or course) to track down the gangleaders who force the young girls into sexual slavery and drug addiction. Carina's presence keeps Walter from being killed as she accompanies him through the seamier side of the Stockholm underworld. ~ Dan Pavlides, All Movie Guide

This uneven comedy is set in the 1920s and stars Janne Carlsson, one of Sweden's favorite comics, in the role of Albert Jansson, a fisherman who turns from fish to foul in order to make a better living. In a near-parody of its cinematic predecessors, Smugglarkungen is also set in a bucolic coastal community where love and the forces of virtue face heavy-duty challenges. Albert is an honest fisherman until he succeeds with a vengeance at bootlegging and cannot but enjoy the happy consequences of his success: namely, the physical attractions of the fair Sickan (Nina Gunke) and equally appealing Grethe (Sanne Salomonsen, one of Denmark's more popular rock stars). Albert's love-life is rudely interrupted when the "smuggling king" Strauss (Ernst Gunther) and his minions resent his intrusion on their lucrative turf, and to make matters worse, Lt. Winkel (Bjorn Skifs) is sent from Stockholm to investigate possible customs violations in the area. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

In this poetic vision of a factory in which the workers appear to have their life-force drained by the dull, demanding routine of each day's work, the directors (Christina Olofson and Goeran du Rees) have hushed the normally strident voices of the disaffected and moved through their environment as though in slow-motion. The axis around which the story revolves is a young artist who works with the machines for his living and sketches his fellow workers for enjoyment -- sketches that his cohorts do not always appreciate. The quiet, somber artist changes when one of the workers collapses and dies on the job -- he starts sleeping with a woman who used to make fun of him (as though to vanquish her), he puts up all his canvasses in the dining hall during the night and despairs when his colleagues still belittle him, burning all his work as a consequence. His battle with creating art for its own sake versus obtaining the approval of his co-workers reaches a climax when he sneaks into the factory again and spends the night painting a large mural. This artistic breakthrough is challenged by a nightwatchman who catches him in the act. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

In this Swedish comedy, Felix wants to transcend his limitations completely. To that end, he leaves his country home and enrolls in training as a fireman's apprentice. If all goes well, not only will he overcome his fear of heights, but also his fear of dangers of all kinds. Alas, things do not go well, and he is dismissed. Felix does show courage, however, when he talks his father out of a suicide attempt. Then for some reason, the boy chooses to steal an ambulance: he plans to try his hand at taking a patient to a hospital, somewhere, sometime. What happens next is more than he bargained for, but that's not all bad. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide
