For his impiety in building his grand house on a site which put it higher than the village of Raminerea's church, the grandfather of a local clan was cursed by the village priest, and six of his seven grandchildren have died before their time. The seventh grandchild is a young lady who, as the film opens, is enjoying clandestine sexual liaisons with a young man. However, when the boy in question chooses to marry another, she goes ballistic and shows up at the wedding to make as loud and unpleasant a scene as she can. Matei Olaru (Stefan Irodache) is a journalist at an independent (not state-supervised) newspaper who takes his work seriously. In the Rumania of 1939, this was, as it often is, a dangerous predisposition. For one thing, the fascist Iron Guard is vigilant in persecuting anyone suspected of "liberal" tendencies. When Matei rescues a girl from a beating by thugs, he is dismayed to discover that the thugs were members of the Iron Guard, and that the girl was a suspected communist. They warn him that his life will be forfeit unless he can find and return the girl to them. As he searches for the girl, he uncovers the true extent of fascist evil in his beloved city of Bucharest. When the leader of a fascist gang known as the Iron Guards discovers that he is dying of cancer, he goes to the cemetery to pay a grudging homage to his former arch-enemy, the late police inspector Moldovan. It turns out, as the fascist soon discovers, that Moldovan was not quite as "late" as everyone thought, and then the hunt for him begins through all the back alleys and seedy night life of the city. The gang leader would very much like to catch the inspector and ensure that the prefix "late" will be accurate this time. One village woman manages to save a comfortable amount of money, enough to send her daughter to a good convent school. Carol II of Rumania (1893-1953), also known as Charles II, was one of the last of Europe's kingly usurpers (having stolen the crown in 1930 from his son) and was also one of the last in Europe to set himself up as an absolute monarch (in 1938). This film takes place in 1937, just before that disastrous move, as a theater company is battling the police and censors to mount a satirical musical comedy. The play plans to poke fun at the Iron Guard, a brutal and much-hated neo-Nazi organization within the government. Before the show can be shut down, the king himself orders that the main performer be protected by the police from "the savages." After a wildly successful opening night, the lead actor Costica Caratese (Toma Caragiu) dies in the wings while listening to the uproarious applause of the audience. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

Bad luck and bad judgment follow two generations of men in this Rumanian tragedy, set in the World War II era. Ion (Dan Nutu) seeks to find out why many years ago his father was falsely accused of being a communist, an accusation which led to his execution. He discovers that his father's mistress, now married to a wealthy man, made the accusation for money, as she was deathly afraid of poverty. Ion's own girlfriend seems to be similarly concerned about issues of livelihood, and abandons him for a richer suitor. This grandiose epic film recounts World War II and post-war exploits from the official biography of the man who ruled Rumania for many years, Nicolai Ceausescu. As Ceausescu was at the height of his power over the country at the time this film was made, this is a very, very careful film. Nonetheless, questions of propaganda and historical accuracy aside, the film's dramatizations of Ceausescu's adventures as an anti-Nazi partisan, his early power struggles and the principles he sets forth for the administration of government are interesting in themselves. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

This Rumanian historical epic chronicles the efforts of Prince Michael to unify the Rumanian region during the Middle Ages. It shows his struggles and battles on a grand scale. It is believed that this was one of the largest, most complex and most expensive films to be made in Rumania in its time (1973).The film's director, Sergiu Nicolaescu, was enormously popular in the Eastern Bloc both as an actor and as a director. Mihai Viteazul, with its consistently fast-paced action, was very well-received. The original epic was in two parts and was over four hours long. A young boy becomes callous to the deaths and battles that rage on during World War II. He and his friends follow a peasant soldier of a Rumanian troop as they march to join the Russians in fighting the Nazis. He watches as one of his friends dies after destroying a German machine gun nest. He is slapped by a Rumanian soldier who is livid over the boy's nonchalance of his friend's death. He becomes a mascot of the advancing unit as they proceed to a castle in Czechoslovakia. When the men dress in armor for a group picture, they are killed by the Nazis. The boy returns to find the men have been wiped out and he is taken prisoner by a German soldier. The Nazi falls victim to marauding peasants seeking revenge.
