Virginia Cherrill Movies
With her extraordinary blue eyes and fragile but strong demeanor, it is small wonder that Charles Chaplin saw in Virginia Cherrill the perfect blind flower girl for his last totally silent film, City Lights (1931). He spotted her at a boxing match and, though she was a socialite with no acting experience, was impressed by her ability to feign sightlessness and so made her his co-star. Though a silent film in the age of talkies, City Lights was one of Chaplin's most popular and poignant movies. Cherrill was absolutely luminous and she seemed to have a bright future in film. Indeed, she subsequently appeared in several more films through the early '30s, including Girls Demand Excitement (1931) and Fast Workers (1933). But she left acting after marrying leading man Cary Grant, whom she met at the premiere of Blonde Venus (1932). The marriage crashed two years later and Cherrill moved to England where she resumed her film career in such films as Troubled Waters (1936). Cherrill left films for good after marrying the ninth Earl of Jersey in 1937. That marriage ended in 1946. Cherrill spent much of WWII working for the Red Cross and performing charity. During the war she married pilot Florian Martini. Cherrill passed away in a Santa Barbara hospital at the age of 88. The cause of death was unreported. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie GuideThe Charlie Chaplin outtakes in this documentary that was first shown at the 1983 Venice film festival kept the audience at that time laughing -- and hoping that similar finds might be made in the future. In Part I, takes from the years 1916-17 are shown including variations on a theme in The Cure. In Part II, Chaplin and his guest Sir Harry Lauder (the famous vaudevillian) exchange costumes and identities as each mimic the other for a home-movie segment, there are also some interviews with Chaplin co-stars, and an alternate ending to the Gold Rush. In Part III, there are vignettes that were dropped from City Lights and Modern Times that -- judging from the hilarity they evoked at the 1983 opener -- merit their own showing any time. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

A British town, desperate to save its dying mineral spring water business, launches a bizarre conspiracy to attract badly needed attention for the town. They do so by claiming that a local man who died in an auto accident was a victim of murder. A government agent comes to investigate and learns, much to the surprise of the locals, that the man really was murdered. In this drama, a cub reporter from the Daily Gazette attempts to catch a bank robber. He is assisted by a woman who wants to provide him with valuable information. One of several poverty-row films which vanished from sight during the 1935-36 movie season, Beacon Productions did its best to stay afloat as long as possible with such potboilers as What Price Crime? Future cowboy hero Charles Starrett is cast as G-Man Allan Grey, hot on the trail of a gang of firearms smugglers. Going undercover, Grey poses as an aspiring prizefighter in order to gain the confidence of gang leader Douglas Worthington (Noel Madison). The plot becomes as thick as pea soup when our hero falls in love with Worthington's sister Sondra (played by Virginia Cherrill, previously the blind flower girl in Chaplin's City Lights). In this melodrama filmed on location in Hawaii, a sugar plantation manager finds himself falling in love with a native girl, but instead of committing to her, he marries a socially prominent young woman from San Francisco. The spoiled girl does not easily adapt to the rigors of plantation life and she gets terribly bored. She is just about to give in to the romantic overtures of a persistent native when her former lover shows up. The husband gets jealous and is about to attack him when the wife sets fire to the cane field. The husband's native lover saves him from death. Afterward, his wife leaves to be with her old flame, and the manager is free to be with the woman he's loved all along. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide

Ray Walker plays Jimmy Case, a combustible young man who loses one job after another because he can't keep his fists to himself. On the verge of losing his girl friend Grace (Dorothy Granger), Walker agrees to hold his temper and try once more. He lands a job as a process server, only to find out that his first assignment is to serve a summons to equally temperamental nightclub singer Eleanor Rogers (Virginia Cherrill, best remembered as the blind flower girl in Chaplin's City Lights). For an early Monogram film, this one is surprisingly high-budgeted, with a particularly impressive cabaret set. Scripted by a very young Dore Schary, He Couldn't Take It was remade three times, most famously as the 1946 "Bowery Boys" series entry Live Wires. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

In this comedy, an oily tongued sleazy lawyer, who specializes in injuries, makes sure all of clients, regardless of the size of their injuries, make it big in court. He is assisted by a thoroughly convincing doctor who can make the smallest bruise look like life-threatening internal bleeding. The lawyer is so successful, that one of the companies he constantly sues attempts to get him disbarred. To prove that he's a shyster, the company hires a pretty woman to seduce the truth out him. Frequently misidentified as Ladies Must Love, this Universal musical represents one of the few screen appearances of Broadway luminary June Knight. The plot is the old one about three gold-digging girls who team up to fleece a millionaire of his millions. The girls are Jeannie (Knight), Dot (Sally O'Neil) and Peggy (Dorothy Burgess): their victim is a wealthy young blade named Bill (Neil Hamilton). Not surprisingly, Jeannie scotches the plan by falling in love with Bill for real. Based on a play by William Hurlbut, Ladies Must Love was the first American film for legendary German director Ewald Andre DuPont. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Warner Oland returns as wily, philosophical oriental detective Charlie Chan in this expensive-looking series entry. This time, Chan follows the trail of clues when a "respectable" Honolulu businessman sidelining in blackmail and other unsavory activities is murdered. Like the earlier Black Camel, the film was made virtually in its entirety in Hawaii, save for a brief expository scene in San Francisco. Alas, this is one of four "Chan" films that apparently no longer exist, but stills and existing publicity material indicate that it was an elaborate production, faster-paced than usual, with Heather Angel attractively garbed in a swimsuit in most of her scenes. A few outtakes of Charlie Chan's Greatest Case were preserved for a Fox Studios "blooper" reel, showing Warner Oland reacting in hilarious rage as he muffs his lines. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Arguably John Ford's weakest film, The Brat was based on a popular 1917 stage play written by and starring Maude Fulton, which in turn was made into a popular comedy for Alla Nazimova in 1919. Although vivacious and pretty, Sally O'Neil was hardly in Nazimova's league but here she is in the title role, a 17-year-old street urchin taken in by wealthy novelist MacMillan "Mack" Forester (Allan Dinehart), whose household she continues to aggravate with her street-smart wisdom. Soon enough, however, the Foresters begin to admire the girl, especially young Steven Forester who has fallen head over heels in love. "The Brat" loves the much older Mack, whose live-in girlfriends (Virginia Cherrill and June Collyer) become instantly jealous. In the end, however, the Brat realizes that Mack's infatuation with her is insincere and decides instead to marry Steven. The Brat was remade a second time by Fox in 1940 as The Girl From Avenue A, a vehicle for juvenile star Jane Withers. ~ Hans J. Wollstein, All Movie Guide

Delicious represents the first time that George and Ira Gershwin ever wrote a musical score exclusively for the screen. Unfortunately, the film fails to come up to the standards set by the music, though it's not from lack of trying. Janet Gaynor stars as Heather Gordon, a poor Scotch immigrant who dreams of relocating to the United States. Her aspirations are confounded by the intractability of the customs inspectors, who are bound and determined to send Heather back whence she came. In the meantime, she takes up residence in a rooming house catering to immigrants, where the other tenants -- especially comic-relief Swede Jansen (El Brendel) -- work overtime to cheer her up. All ends happily when American millionaire Jerry Beaumont (Charles Farrell) proposes marriage, despite his family's objections. The musical numbers include the overly coy title tune, a bizarre "Welcome to America" setpiece in which Heather dreams that she's being greeted by a singing Statue of Liberty, and a virtually complete performance of Gershwin's Second Rhapsody (aka The New York Rhapsody). The film's highlight, however, is El Brendel's rendition of the Blah Blah Blah song, in which he itemizes every love-song cliché known to man. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

No relation to the 1935 Mascot programmer of the same name, Girls Demand Excitement offers an early starring appearance by John Wayne. The Duke is cast as college basketball player Peter Brooks, who's in love with sports-happy Joan Madison (Virginia Cherrill). Their hot-and-cold relationship culminates in a boys-against-the-girls basketball match, a scene only slightly less ridiculous than an early sequence in which a bunch of sexually integrated psychology students are assigned to test the "emotional reaction" to a group necking session! Evidently designed as a musical, Girls Demand Excitement contains no songs whatsoever, robbing future generations of the spectacle of John Wayne serenading his lady love. With films like these, it's no wonder that Wayne had to start his career all over again in cheap westerns. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Charles Chaplin was deep into production of his silent City Lights when Hollywood was overwhelmed by the talkie revolution. After months of anguished contemplation, Chaplin decided to finish the film as it began--in silence, save for a musical score and an occasional sound effect. Once again cast as the Little Tramp, Chaplin makes the acquaintance of a blind flower girl (Virginia Cherrill), who through a series of coincidences has gotten the impression that the shabby tramp is a millionaire. A second storyline begins when the tramp rescues a genuine millionaire (Harry Myers) from committing suicide. When drunk, the millionaire expansively treats the tramp as a friend and equal; when sober, he doesn't even recognize him. The two plots come together when the tramp attempts to raise enough money for the blind girl to have an eye operation. Highlights include an extended boxing sequence pitting scrawny Chaplin against muscle-bound Hank Mann, and the poignant final scene in which the now-sighted flower girl sees her impoverished benefactor for the first time. Chaplin's decision to release the silent City Lights three years into the talkie era was partially vindicated when more than one critic singled out this "comedy in pantomime" as the best picture of 1931. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
