To everything there is a season and the same is true for professional boxers as can be seen in this contemplative winner of the 1995 FIPRESCI (an international critics' choice honor) award in Turin. Using a semi-professional cast, some of whom are actual fighters, Italian filmmaker and screenwriter Lino Caplolichio examines four boxers, each in different stages in their career. All the stories are imbued with a sense of disillusion and the violent fights are presented without undue romanticism or glorification. The story of boxing great from the '40s and '50s Tiberio Mitri , told via archival clips of his major fights and includes the one in which he was pummeled by world champion, Jake La Motta, provides the framework for the other three stories. In the first episode, Ciro, a 16-year old rookie impresses those who watch him spar in a run-down gym in working-class Naples. Later he must fight his sparring partner and closest friend in the regional championships. This creates much inner turmoil for Ciro. In the following vignette, a rising champion tries to psyche himself up for the most important match of his career. He is stuck in an English hotel during a terrible rainstorm and his preparation and attempts to master his considerable fear are constantly undermined by his manager, who continues barging in, and a snoopy reporter, whom he suspects was hired by the opposition to rattle him. The final story follows the humiliation of an older fighter struggling to maintain his title. Unfortunately he suffers a terrible defeat. In the end, Mitri gets the last words as he reflects upon his own career. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi

Forbes is a troubled young woman who grows up to be a prostitute in this sexually-charged drama that uses flashbacks to show the reasons why. It all had to do with her upbringing. Her overbearing mother never overcame her bitterness at having been abandoned by her husband, who had a thing for prostitutes. The story jumps to the present where Forbes is seen playing "baby" to her johns, whom she calls "daddy." She encourages them because it makes her feel closer to her real pa. One day, a lesbian colleague attempts to seduce her. Forbes rejects her, and the jilted girl gets revenge by setting her up with her own father. Grecian-style tragedy ensues. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi

This is a standard, somewhat slow-paced drama about a much-needed transformation in a husband and father. Duncan (Van Heflin) is a womanizer who has no faith in the loyalty of any woman and cannot shake that attitude after he falls in love with Liana (Ellie Lambetti) and marries her. One of several disagreements with Liana sends Duncan out of the house with their son to escape on a boating trip. Instead of the respite he imagines, Duncan and his son are left stranded on a small raft after an accident -- giving him plenty of time to think back on his own behavior and why he might believe his wife is unfaithful. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

In this military comedy, Maj. Richardson (David Niven) and Lt. Burke (Michael Wilding) are two British soldiers on a recognizance mission over Ethiopia in 1941 when their plane crashes in the desert. Capt. Blasi (Alberto Sordi), an Italian officer, finds the Englishmen and offers to help them: he'll let them go if they allow him and his men to take over an old fort nearby and stay there without being bothered. Richardson and Burke agree, and they return to their base of operations, only to discover that they've been ordered to attack the fort and capture Blasi and his men. Richardson considers himself a man of his word and doesn't care for this duty; in time, the two men become friends and exchange banter as they take turns capturing one another. Remarkably enough, Italian actor Alberto Sordi didn't speak English when he made this film, and he learned all his dialogue phonetically. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

This classic Greek tale of a friendship that overcomes even death makes for an interesting sword-and-sandal saga, with Guy Williams in the role of Damon. An apt choice since Williams is himself an expert swordsman, as partially demonstrated in his role as Zorro on American television (1957-59). Pythias (Don Burnett) has been caught plotting the assassination of King Dionysis I of Syracuse (Arnoldo Foa). Before his execution, Dionysis grants Pythias leave to put his affairs in order because Damon volunteers to stand in his stead if Pythias does not come back to face the executioner. Damon's act is considered foolish. He was safe, why should Pythias come back? But the two are devotees of the Pythagorean mysteries, and their faith in brotherly love goes beyond self-interest. When Pythias does return in the allotted time, King Dionysis is impressed enough to have a change of heart. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

Once branded himself by the House Un-American Activities Committee, award-winning director Martin Ritt focuses on the cruel branding of five women in this standard wartime drama. Some of his better-known films (The Spy Who Came In from the Cold, Norma Rae) also deal with the question of social and ethical choices in the face of pressure. In this story, the savagery of the Yugoslav partisans as they fight off Nazi occupation forces is also vented on five women accused of Nazi sympathies because of their sexual association with one German officer. The women (played by Silvana Mangano, Vera Miles, Barbara Bel Geddes, Jeanne Moreau, and Carla Gravina) have their heads shaved in order to brand them as traitors. What the partisans did to the German officer (Steve Forrest) in revenge for sleeping with these women was much worse. Intermittently shocking, the film with its excess cruelty and hatreds stands as a good indictment against war and its causes. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

Vittorio Gassman and Alberto Sordi don ill-fitting military uniforms in this anecdotal Italian service comedy. They play a couple of World War I soldiers, adept at sidestepping duty and responsibility, but courageous to the core when in a pinch. The film strives for the boisterous feel of What Price Glory, but at 118 minutes the material wears rather thin. Still, the reputation of director Mario Monicelli helped this uneven production win a Golden Lion award at the Venice Film Festival. Originally released in Italy in 1959 as La Grande Guerra, The Great War was distributed in the U.S. two years later. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

This 1959 version of Lew Wallace's best-selling novel, which had already seen screen versions in 1907 and 1926, went on to win 11 Academy Awards. Adapted by Karl Tunberg and a raft of uncredited writers including Gore Vidal and Maxwell Anderson, the film once more recounts the tale of Jewish prince Judah Ben-Hur (Charlton Heston), who lives in Judea with his family during the time that Jesus Christ was becoming known for his "radical" teachings. Ben-Hur's childhood friend Messala (Stephen Boyd) is now an ambitious Roman tribune; when Ben-Hur refuses to help Messala round up local dissidents on behalf of the emperor, Messala pounces on the first opportunity to exact revenge on his onetime friend. Tried on a trumped-up charge of attempting to kill the provincial governor (whose head was accidentally hit by a falling tile), Ben-Hur is condemned to the Roman galleys, while his mother (Martha Scott) and sister (Cathy O'Donnell) are imprisoned. But during a sea battle, Ben-Hur saves the life of commander Quintus Arrius (Jack Hawkins), who, in gratitude, adopts Ben-Hur as his son and gives him full control over his stable of racing horses. Ben-Hur never gives up trying to find his family or exact revenge on Messala. At crucial junctures in his life, he also crosses the path of Jesus, and each time he benefits from it. The highlight of the film's 212 minutes is its now-legendary chariot race, staged largely by stunt expert Yakima Canutt. Ben-Hur's Oscar haul included Best Picture, Best Director for the legendary William Wyler, Best Actor for Heston, and Best Supporting Actor for Welsh actor Hugh Griffith as an Arab sheik. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Farewell to Arms is the second film version of Ernest Hemingway's World War One novel--and also the last film produced by David O. Selznick (Gone with the Wind). Rock Hudson plays an American serving in the Italian Army during the "War to End All Wars". Jennifer Jones is his lover, a Red cross nurse. They have a torrid affair, which results in Jones' pregnancy. As the months pass, Hudson and Jones lose contact with one another, and Jones believes that Hudson has forgotten her. But a battle-weary Hudson finally makes it to Switzerland, where Jones is hospitalized. The baby is stillborn, and Jones dies shortly afterward, murmuring that her death is "a dirty trick." Filmed on a simpler scale in 1932 (with Gary Cooper and Helen Hayes starring), A Farewell to Arms was blown all out of proportion to "epic" stature for the 1957 remake--so much so that its original director, John Huston, quit the film in disgust. Still, the basic love story is touchingly enacted by Rock Hudson and Jennifer Jones. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
