Enrico is raised by a humble guardian who works as a butler, his brother Lorenzo (Jacques Perrin) is taken in by a grandmother who gives him all he wants or needs. Enrico grows up to become a hard-working journalist, spending most of his time in Rome. Lorenzo is a young idealist living in Florence with no real need to work. Based on a Jules Verne tale about a make-believe, 19th-century country in the throes of revolution, this routine costume drama by Georges Lampin has a slight storyline about Mathias (Louis Jourdan), a noble count whose innate sensibilities lead him to side with the rebelling masses and intellectuals in the nation. His problem is that his daughter has fallen in love with the leader of the military regime, causing an understandable split in the family. This uneven but interesting drama by director and writer Renato Castellani tells the tale of a brigand and the people who become involved with him. Michele Rende (Adelmo di Fraia) is both a town legend and a hot-tempered young man who is thrown in prison after being accused of a murder he did not commit. Unwilling to submit to trial, Michele escapes and heads up into the hills, from which vantage point he helps poor farmers to carry out the illegal acquisition of unused farm lands. A local boy, Nino (Francesco Seminirao) has come to worship Michele like a real hero and later, Michele falls in love with Nino's sister.
