This TV movie recounts the true-life story of a corporate takeover in the greed-driven 1980s. James Garner is F. Ross Johnson, CEO of RJR-Nabisco. Having just been burned by an expensive failure of a smokeless cigarette product, Johnson doesn't wish to incur the wrath of the stockholders. He begins drawing up plans to buy RJR-Nabisco outright so he'll have no one to answer to but himself. Unfortunately for Johnson, his company is also being coveted by sharkish "buyout king" Henry Kravis (Jonathan Pryce), who turns out to have $25 billion at his beck and call. Barbarians at the Gate was adapted by Larry Gelbart from the book by Bryan Burrough and John Helyar. Dance to Win is set in the outer fringes of Hollywood. A gang of delinquents, jealously observing the "haves", see no way out of their lot other than petty thievery. The gang is redeemed when they are organized into a dance troupe specializing in interpreting vintage rock 'n' roll themes. Charles Gomez, Daniel Quinn and Sally Stewart are among the leading players; the film's choreography was handled by no less than Paula Abdul. In this crime drama, a sophisticated thief is working on a caper involving precious rubies when he sees that the owner of the stones is the man who caused his ex-girl friend to kill herself. Thoughts of thieving are replaced by plans for revenge. The thief becomes obsessed and is not paying careful attention. His intended victim catches him and threatens his life. Fortunately, another thief rescues him and kills the jewel owner. Later, the protagonist's rescuer is killed by the police while the protagonist and his new lover take off and head for South America. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide

The Lady Vanishes, Alfred Hitchcock's comedy-thriller, came at the end of his British period; this film's success brought Hitchcock to the attention of Hollywood. He would complete only one other British production, Jamaica Inn, before crossing the Atlantic to working for David O. Selznick on Rebecca. The film concerns the young Iris Henderson (Margaret Lockwood), heading home on a train after spending the holidays in the Balkans. Iris becomes friends with a kindly old lady, Miss Froy (Dame May Whitty) after Iris gets hit in the head with a flowerpot meant for Miss Froy. On the train, recovering from the blow, Iris falls asleep. When she awakens, Miss Froy has vanished, replaced by someone else in Miss Froy's clothing. Iris talks to the other passengers, a bizarre collection of eccentrics who think that Iris is crazy for insisting on there even being a Miss Froy -- everyone denies having ever seen the old woman. Finally, Iris finds a young musician, Gilbert (Michael Redgrave), who believes her and the two proceed to search the train for clues to Miss Froy's disappearance. ~ Paul Brenner, All Movie Guide

Hollywood favorites Charles Farrell and Gregory Ratoff head the cast of the British romantic comedy Falling In Love. The film's real star, however, is young Mary Lawson, here making her cinema debut. The plot concerns a famous film star (Farrell) who seeks shelter from his mobs of fans by hiding out on the top of a London double-decker bus. Alas, he hasn't the proper fare, so our hero must rely upon the kindness of strangers -- or specifically, a stranger, pretty shopgirl Lawson. Eventually falling in love with the star, Lawson is disillusioned by manager Ratoff, who informs the girl that Farrell is not only a love-'em-and-leave-'em type, but is already married. A happy ending does come about, however, thanks to a last-minute chase between an ocean liner and a tugboat (such sequences were a matter of course for the film's director, former silent-screen comedian Monty Banks). ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
