Video Vixens purports to be a satire of the phony liberalism that resulted in the permissiveness of the 1980s. A libidinous TV executive decides to stage an awards show. But not just any awards show: this one will honor the finest achievements in the world of filmed pornography. Thus does satire take second place to acres and acres of female skin and 85 minutes' worth of soft-core titillation. Robyn Hilton and Sandy Dempsey are among the au naturel cuties in this ham-handed "comedy." ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

This charming slice-of-life film explores the twisted mind of a deranged, sweaty New York sculptor (Bo Brundin) whose poverty drives him to commit petty burglary, for which he is rewarded by having his left eye carved out (with a spoon, no less) by a potential victim. After shrieking repeatedly throughout the opening credits, our tortured artist eventually begins stalking New Yorkers, popping their eyes out and casting them in resin for display in his gallery. This continues ad nauseam until the madman gets his just desserts in the messiest way imaginable. Though not quite as gory as it sounds, this is certainly one of the sleaziest horror films ever produced, made even more unbearable by a severe misogynist streak. Those daring enough to take a gander may wish to don rubber gloves before extricating this tape from the VCR. ~ Cavett Binion, Rovi

After several years working along the margins of the underground film scene in New York, director Robert Downey broke through to wider recognition with the arthouse hit Putney Swope, a wildly irreverent satire of race and advertising in America. Putney Swope (Arnold Johnson) is the token African-American executive at an otherwise all-white advertising agency when the chairman of the board unexpectedly drops dead. Through a fluke in the chain of command, Swope becomes the new head of the firm, and decides its time to do things his way. He fires nearly all the staff (except for his one token white employee), renames the agency Truth and Soul, Inc., and announces they'll no longer accept accounts advertising tobacco, alcohol, or war toys. The ads they do produce -- for acne remedies and breakfast cereal, among other things -- are wildly successful, and the iconoclastic ad agency (which only accepts payment in cash) is targeted by government operatives as a threat to the national security. Antonio Fargas and Allen Garfield lead the supporting cast; Mel Brooks makes a cameo appearance. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
