The rugged world of those who built the Alaskan pipeline provides the backdrop for this drama featuring the non-singing film debut of soul-singer Gladys Knight (she and her Pips do sing on the soundtrack though). The story centers on her attempts to regain the love of her estranged husband who works up there. She goes to the wild, wooly town where he is based. There women are hard to find, and those who are there make big bucks selling themselves to lonely workers. Knight is a pretty woman so it doesn't take long for the man who runs the town to try and convince her into becoming a high--priced whore. George Pal's final film is a kiddie action saga based on the popular comic strip and action book series by Kenneth Robeson. Ron Ely is all flash and charmless brawn as the blonde-haired superhero Doc Savage, the Man of Bronze. When his father is mysteriously murdered, Savage gathers together five of his cronies -- The Amazing Five -- to head off on an expedition to South America to find some answers. There he battles Captain Seas (Paul Wexler) and "the green death." The focus in this episode is on Robert Donner) as police informer TeeJay, a familiar if not always welcome figure at the Rampart division. Officers Reed (Kent McCord) and Malloy (Martin Milner) are somewhat surprised when TeeJay is hauled into jail, suspected of assault and robbery. Though the two cops do what they can to help him, TeeJay's past history as a drug addict works against him. In this decidedly Hollywood view of what growing up Puerto Rican in New York must really be like, almost an entire family (with only one son and a daughter) faces disintegration and tragedy. The father loses his job, which puts the family in a crisis situation. So the son goes out to find work as a delivery boy and the daughter eventually lapses into prostitution. Trouble brews when the son confronts a local gang leader whom he believes has misused his sister, and the mother similarly tracks down a bully for more or less the same reason. In a plot twist, it is the mother's confrontation that goes from bad to worse, precipitating a comparable and tragic denouement at home. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide
