A hopelessly lovesick young man finds himself repeatedly cast into a platonic role vis-à-vis the girl of his dreams, in this contemporary romantic comedy from Spain. Lanky and awkward teen Chema (Gorka Otxoa) still struggles to come to terms with a recent break-up from Elisa (Barbara Santa Cruz). Evenings now consist of systematically combing the town with best pal Ruben (Julian Lopez) to try to find an adequate replacement. She arrives -- or so Chema thinks -- in the form of the gorgeous Argentine waif Claudia (Sabrina Garciarena), an aspiring hairstylist who asks Chema to let her try out her craft on him (when she suggests that they re-do his hair in the style of Enrique Bunbury -- a singer whom he detests -- he unflinchingly agrees). Unfortunately, viewing Chema as a boyfriend or a lover is the furthest thing from Claudia's mind, and she perpetually refers to him as a friend, treating him with tremendous insensitivity. Meanwhile, at Chema's house, his paternal uncle Jaime (Oscar Ladoire) repeatedly turns up, nurturing feelings for Chema's single mother, Gloria (Kiti Manver), and determines to win the woman's heart. Director and co-screenwriter Borja Cobeaga packs the film with dozens of gags from first frame to last, and renders his film unique by resisting crude and raunchy humor throughout, and instead opting for family-friendly wit. ~ Nathan Southern, All Movie Guide

Three young people are forced to examine their personal and political ideals in this drama. In 1975, Victor (Andoni Gracia) is a young man in his early twenties; while he and his family are originally from Portugal, they emigrated to Paris when Victor's parents decided they could no longer tolerate the nation's Fascist rule. When Socialist factions overthrow Portugal's Fascist government, Victor is eager to celebrate the new freedoms in his homeland, convincing his close friend Marco (Adriano Giannini) to join him for a road trip to Lisbon. Tagging along for the ride is Claire (Gwenaelle Simon), Victor's former girlfriend, who is now married but still hangs out with him. As the three cover the miles to Lisbon in a beat-up Citroen 2CV, boredom leads to tension and anxiety among the three, which isn't eased when Victor discovers Marco once seduced Claire during the time they were still involved. Victor, Marco, and Claire eventually make it to Lisbon, where they meet up with Victor's Uncle Enrique (Francisco Rabal), but the visitors discover the fall of fascism hasn't brought the overnight changes they expected. Two young men have left their obscure Balkan country to earn some money as "guest workers" in western Europe. On their way back home, they attempt to change trains in Paris but encounter surprising difficulties from the ticket authorities there. It seems that political changes have rendered their homeland nonexistent, and their passports are no good. Before long, they are stranded in Paris without passports, without a country, and soon even their luggage is stolen. Their fumbling efforts to straighten out the mess result in the French press getting into the act, labeling them as Russian spies. The Parisian expatriate community takes them into its bosom, and romance blooms between one of the lads and a Spanish hatmaker, before they finally achieve a (highly improbable) solution for their difficulties. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide

The spirit, hopes, and failures of a troupe of itinerant performers in the 1950s create a poignant, humorous leitmotif in this drama by Fernando Fernan-Gomez. The story of the wandering players is told in flashbacks, as Carlos Galvan (Jose M. Sacristan) reminisces about the good times while under therapy with a psychiatrist in a senior citizens' home. Carlos and his lover Juanita (Laura del Sol), his teenage son, his father, and a few other actors try to eke out a living by putting on shows in small towns and villages. No one has very much money, but life is lived to the hilt, and Carlos himself has some pretty tall tales. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

This ostensible comedy about the affairs or non-existent affairs of television executive Federico José Sacristán and his actress wife Elena Victoria Abril) is almost as hard to believe as director Manuel Gutiérrez-Aragón's previous effort Feroz. Federico convinces a friend to attempt to seduce his wife in order to test her fidelity. She passes the test, but her husband is not satisfied, and so he asks his boss to seduce her. Events conspire to lead the boss in another direction -- it turns out he is more interested in a transvestite who is actually the secret lover of Federico, and the boss seduces him instead. Meanwhile, Elena is acting in a production of Don Juan in which two of her supposed lovers are playing her lovers -- and the story continues downhill from there. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

New director Oscar Ladoire has decided to write, direct, and star in his second movie, about a sophisticated director who walks out of the premiere of his latest film, hops in his nifty car, and skedaddles out of town. When he stops at a gas station, he picks up what has come to be derisively known as a "bimbo" -- a woman who cannot speak in any language except that of the streets, who exudes sex with every movement, and who, quite naturally, is ready to go along with the first man who picks her up -- in this case, the upper-crust director. The two set off for Galicia with no particular objective in mind, other than the geographical, and the film follows them on their travels with the same attitude. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

Directed by Fernando (Belle Epoque) Trueba, the Spanish/ French Opera Prima stars Oscar Ladiore as a young divorced employee at a news agency. Outside the subway one evening, Ladione chances to meet his beautiful cousin, played by Paula Molina (sister of actress Angela Molina). The two commence an affair, then drift apart. Molina, an aspiring musician, falls under the spell of her pretentious tutor. On the verge of leaving the country with her teacher, she is "rescued" at the airport by Ladiore. The title's significance can be explained by its literal translation, "First Effort" (it is the first romance for Ladione after his marital breakup), and by the fact that "Opera" and "Prima" are slang terms for "Subway" and "Cousin," respectively. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
