After her sister Sue was killed in a car chase, Zoe left Vegas, returning to her hometown to care for Sue's three children. Here she came face-to-face with a disreputable insurance company who refused to honor Sue's policy and provide for her kids. This experience led Zoe into a whole new career as a full-time insurance-fraud investigator, with all the adventure and mystery attending this job. In this Six Million Dollar Man for the computer-wonk generation, Christopher Gorham starred as Jake Foley, a nerdish Georgetown graduate who yearned to be a spy. Presenting his credentials to the CIA-ish National Security Agency, Jake was immediately hired -- as a lower-level computer repairman. It was while working in this capacity that our hero was exposed to fragments of an experimental biotech formula, which instantly transformed him into a half-human, half-computerized cyborg. Though poor Jake didn't quite know how to best use his new, awesome powers (heck, he couldn't even use them to score with chicks), the NSA opted to make the hapless fellow the central figure in a special-ops force designed to foil villains throughout the world. Other characters include Jake's NSA boss, Kyle Duarte (Philip Anthony-Rodriguez); fellow agent Louise Beckett (Judith Scott); congressional staffer Sarah Heywood (Marina Black); research doctor Diane Hughes (Keegan Connor Tracy); and our hero's comic-relief roommate, Darin Metcalf (Matt Czuchry). Legendary country singer Willie Nelson) is accused of murdering his crooked road manager Sonny Cross (David Anderson). Asked by Lt. Disher (Jason Gray-Stanford) to investigate, Monk (Tony Shalhoub) has trouble upholding his objectivity: it seems that Nelson was the favorite performer of Monk's late wife Trudy. Alas, it looks bad for Willie, thanks to evidence provided by a blind woman named Wendy Mass (Jackie Richardson). Meanwhile, Monk's assistant Sharona (Bitty Schram) finds a new boyfriend named Jason--who has a very curious (and highly antisocial!) hobby. "Earth can be darker than space," so read the tagline for the ambitious cable sci-fi/fantasy series Odyssey 5. Returning from a lengthy mission in deep space, the crew of a shuttle discovered that they cannot go home because there is no home to go to: The Earth had been destroyed by a huge explosion. A mysterious alien called "the Seeker" (played in the two-hour pilot episode by John Neville) offered the crew an opportunity to prevent the catastrophe and save humankind by traveling five years back in time. There was only one hitch: The crew members were not their "present" selves in the past, but had all grown five years younger, and were still mired in the personal problems that plagued them at this earlier stage: One of the crewpersons was stuck in an unhappy marriage, another was weighed down by a drug dependency, still another was a pimply faced, neurotic high school kid, and so on. The principal characters were the Taggarts -- Chuck (Peter Weller), Neil (Christopher Gorham), Paige (Gina Clayton), and Marc (Kenneth Mitchell) -- and Kurt Mendel (Sebastian Roche), Angela Perry (Tamara Craig Thomas), and Sarah Forbes (Leslie Silva). The versatile Tony Shalhoub starred in this weekly, hour-long mystery series as Adrian Monk, an unorthodox but undeniably brilliant San Francisco police detective. Quitting the force after the death of his wife, Monk suddenly began developing profound and bizarre obsessive-compulsive tendencies, allowing his many phobias -- including a morbid fear of heights, germs, darkness, crowds, even dairy products -- to compromise his skills as a forensic investigator. Nonetheless, Monk flourished as a private detective with the help of his live-in nurse Sharona Fleming (Bitty Schram) and the grudging assistance of his envious former SFPD superior Captain Stottlemeyer (Ted Levine). A marvelous blend of high humor and deadly seriousness (in the two-hour opener, Monk had to chase a perpetrator into the sewer system, nearly causing him to go into a hissy-fit when his immaculate wardrobe picked up a stain or two), Monk debuted with much fanfare over the USA cable network on July 12, 2002. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

After their music has endured centuries, it's hard to believe that some classical composers were not as successful in their own lifetimes. In this edition of the composer series from HBO, George Friderick Handel travels to Dublin to try to revive his failing music career by premiering his first oratorio, "The Messiah," what would become his greatest work. While searching for singers to perform in the production, Handel meets street urchin Jamie O'Flaherty, who has the perfect voice for a solo. Handel saves Jamie from poverty, and Jamie saves the show and Handel's career. Historically accurate and musically adept, this video is a valuable resource for music appreciation programs. The title of this Anglo-Canadian TV production is tinged with irony. So far as the main characters are concerned, home is a still a long way to go. Set in the months following World War I, the film takes place in a squalid Welsh "halfway" camp, where Canadian soldiers are kept for an interminable period of time before the British government deigns to ship them home. Fed up with go-nowhere bureaucracy and the shabbiness of their surroundings, the Canadians stage a violent revolt. Based on a true story, Going Home represented the directorial debut of veteran costume designer Terry Ryan.
