Dave Chappelle Movies

Like future co-stars Martin Lawrence, Eddie Murphy, and Norm MacDonald, Dave Chappelle entered the movie business via standup comedy. Born in Ohio and raised in Washington, D.C., Chappelle studied acting at D.C.'s Duke Ellington School of the Arts and honed his skills as a laid-back yet socially attuned comic in the city's clubs. After making his movie debut as one of the merry men in Mel Brooks' Robin Hood: Men in Tights (1993), Chappelle concentrated primarily on his comedy career and appeared regularly on late night and cable television. He returned to films with small yet key parts in two summer blockbusters: as a comic who helps spoil a date for Murphy's rotund scientist in The Nutty Professor (1996) and as a manic inmate aboard the hijacked convict plane in Con Air (1997). Hitting his movie stride in 1998, Chappelle co-wrote and starred in the prison/pothead caper Half Baked (1998), played a randy schemer in Woo (1998), and revealed that he could also play it (somewhat) straight as Tom Hanks' best friend in Nora Ephron's popular romantic comedy You've Got Mail (1998). Maintaining his dual professions, Chappelle turned a cameo role as Lawrence's former criminal partner into a full-fledged supporting turn in Blue Streak (1999), co-starred with MacDonald in the ill-received Screwed (2000), and returned to Washington, D.C., and HBO with his special Dave Chappelle: Killin' Them Softly (2000).
Chappelle had better luck with his next film, the blaxploitation spoof Undercover Brother (2002). As the B.R.O.T.H.E.R.H.O.O.D.’s terminally paranoid agent Conspiracy Brother, Chappelle was a hilariously twitchy comic highlight in the hit-or-miss satire; Undercover Brother became a small hit amid the summer blockbusters. Chappelle’s cutting humor could also be heard on TV that same season, with Chappelle lending his voice as a prank caller to Comedy Central’s ribald puppet “reality” show Crank Yankers (2002). His characters on that show were a hit with audiences in search of a hearty laugh, and the following year Comedy Central gave the comedian his own series - the aptly titled Chappelle's Show. Perhaps one of the most controversial series - comedy or otherwise - to hit the airwaves in recent memory, Chappelle's Show offered searing social commentary while frequently pushing the boundaries of good taste. With sketch subjects including a blind black man who - not realizing his true race - heads the Ku Klux Klan and collaborators including former Sanford and Son writer Paul Mooney, the series frequently courted controversy much to the delight of its loyal legions of fans. ~ Lucia Bozzola, All Movie Guide

Long before he headlined his own cutting-edge Comedy Central sketch series, African-Amercian comedian Dave Chappelle was the co-star of the conformist ABC sitcom Buddies. Chappelle and Christopher Gartin were cast as black Chicagoan Dave Carlisle and Dave's lifelong white pal John Butler, who ran a small videotaping company called Hi-Intensity. Hoping to break into the big time and land a Hollywood contract, our heroes exercised their auteur filmmaking muscles at various Windy City social functions, including weddings, birthday parties, Bar Mitzvahs, and funerals. Also in the cast was Paula Cale as John's wacky young bride Lorraine, Tanya Wright as Dave's sassy girlfriend Phyllis Brooks, Judith Ivey as Lorraine's trailer trash, epithet-spouting mother Maureen "Mo" DeMoss, and former Shaft star Richard Roundtree as Dave's father -- and Hi-Intensity's no-nonsense landlord. Debuting March 5, 1996, as a spin-off of the successful ABC comedy series Home Improvement, Buddies fell far short of matching its parent series' success; it was canceled after five weeks, leaving eight of its completed episodes unshown. The entire series has since that time been released on DVD, to capitalize on Dave Chappelle's latter-day popularity. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

This weekly sketch comedy series was a splendid vehicle for the talents of in-your-face African-American monologist Dave Chappelle. All of the sequences gleefully played what political pundits refer to as "the race card," with Chappelle attacking any number of sacred cows, both white and black. One of the series' most talked about sketches featured Chappelle as Clayton Bigsby, a blind white supremacist who had no idea that he was African-American. Created by the star and his longtime collaborator Neal Brennan (the team's previous credits included the theatrical feature Half Baked), Chappelle's Show premiered January 22, 2003, on the Comedy Central cable network. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Season one of Chappelle's Show is highlighted by one of star Dave Chappelle's most inspired character creations: Clayton Bigsby, a blind man who doesn't know he is black and has become a race-bashing member of the Ku Klux Klan! Also good for laughs are Dave's faux "outtakes" from the miniseries Roots; a dramatization of what will happen when blacks finally get all that "reparation" money; the bigoted viewpoints of Hollywood's biggest animal stars; a crack addict's anti-drug speech at a grade school; the time-traveling "Player Haters"; Dave's recurring feature "Great Moments in Hook-Up History"; and funky revisionist versions of Ghost, Pretty Woman, and The Matrix. Guest stars include comedian Chris Rock, talk show host Carson Daly, musical performers 50 Cent and Mos Def...and Stephen King (!?!?). ~ All Movie Guide

Season two of Chappelle's Show brings forth such guest stars as DMX, Ludacris, Jamie Foxx, Wayne Brady, Eddie Griffin, Samuel L. In one memorable episode, Dave Chappelle reintroduces one of his season-one characters, crackhead Tyrone Biggums, in a "lost episode" of Fear Factor. This season also introduced the recurring segment "Charlie Murphy's True Hollywood Stories," in which Chappelle would reenact supposedly true incidents between Murphy and such celebrities as Rick James and Prince (with Chappelle playing those celebrities). Other highlights include the trials and tribulations of a white family named the "Niggars"; Chappelle magnanimously taking the place of such famous black courtroom defendants as R. Kelly and Michael Jackson; what the world would be like if everyone was gay; a very close encounter with Oprah Winfrey; and the saga of "Prince NegroDamus." ~ All Movie Guide

Comic genius Dave Chappelle trained his satirical eye on the vagaries of pop culture and race relations in his brilliant but short-lived Comedy Central series CHAPPELLE'S SHOW. The edgy funnyman brandished his unique style of streetsmart comedy to skewer everything from car commercials to the KKK, blending sketches, parodies, standup, and musical guest performances into a hilarious sendup of modern American life. Though the show was cancelled after only two seasons, Chappelle did record a handful of skits for a possible third season, presented here as a collection of "lost episodes."

When his release comes through, he's eager to see the daughter he's never met. However, Poe's original flight is delayed, so he's put aboard a flight transporting ten of the most dangerous men in the American penal system to a new high-security facility. One of the criminals, Cyrus "The Virus" Grissom (John Malkovich), is a serial killer and insane genius who has hatched a diabolical plot: with the help of several other hoods, including Diamond Dog (Ving Rhames), Johnny 23 (Daniel Trejo), and Garland Greene (Steve Buscemi), Cyrus and his men will hijack the plane and fly to a neutral nation where they can live as free men. Poe finds himself stuck in the middle; he has to find a way to get home, keep himself alive, look after his cellmate Baby-O (Mykelti Williamson), who will die without proper medicine, and try to help the cops on the ground, including agent Vince Larkin (John Cusack). In September 2004, comedian Dave Chappelle took a break from his immensely successful Comedy Central show to stage a free, unpublicized, all-star hip-hop concert in the Clinton Hill neighborhood of Brooklyn, NY. Inviting fans over the Internet, on the street, and even in his family's hometown of Yellow Springs, OH, Chappelle asked filmmaker Michel Gondry to document the event from its inception on through to the performances themselves. The result is Dave Chappelle's Block Party, a concert film that provides not only a sampling of the music on display that September, but also an intimate look at the comedian himself. Gondry's cameras tag along with Chappelle as he visits Ohio, recruits a university marching band to play at the show, and surveys the opinions of Clinton Hill on the show that's about to take place. Along the way, we're introduced to some the comedian's favorite acts, in rehearsals and on-stage: Dead Prez, Jill Scott, Mos Def, the Roots, Erykah Badu, Kanye West, and the surprise reuniting of the Fugees. ~ Michael Hastings, All Movie Guide

An attempted black comedy, Getting In endeavors to satirize the cut-throat competition surrounding the medical school admissions process -- a struggle that in this case literally turns deadly. Gabriel Higgs is an aspiring medical student, not out of a great dedication to his craft but due to pressure by his parents, who expect him to follow the long-standing family tradition of attending Johns Hopkins and embarking upon a prominent medical career. However, a poor showing in the admissions test and several other mishaps conspire to place Gabriel on the school's waiting list. Desperate to gain entrance to the school before being disinherited, Gabriel takes to bribing his fellow waiting-list candidates to ensure his admission. But when the students at the top of the waiting list start turning up dead in rather nasty ways, Gabriel finds himself in real trouble. He must discover who is committing these crimes before he is blamed -- or becomes the next victim himself. Easily forgettable, the film is mainly notable for featuring early performances by future television stars Matthew Perry and Calista Flockhart, and for being the directorial debut of Doug Liman, who would receive critical acclaim for his second film, Swingers. ~ Judd Blaise, All Movie Guide

In the vein of such contemporaries as Martin Lawrence, Eddie Griffin and Norm McDonald, African American comic Dave Chappelle launched himself as a stand-up act, then segued into movies with turns in such comedies as Mel Brooks's Robin Hood: Men in Tights (1993) (as one of the Merry Men Rappers), Eddie Murphy's The Nutty Professor (1996) (as a standup who ruins the title character's date, and is then tortured by his alter ego), and Nora Ephron's You've Got Mail (as Tom Hanks's wisecracking assistant). As the new millennium dawned, Chappelle established himself on Crank Yankers, Comedy Central's gutterbucket answer to The Jerky Boys, as one of the recurring prank phone callers. The success of this turn induced the network to give Chappelle his own sketch comedy program, The Dave Chappelle Show, in which he used a cutting, acerbic wit and keen insights to examine racial attitudes and African American icons, such as Prince and Rick James. Then, the comedian suddenly and unexpectedly dropped out of the limelight, abandoned the program and took a pilgrimage to Africa. In Inside the Actor's Studio: Dave Chappelle, taped in early 2006, the talented comedian sits on the infamous stage opposite 12+ year series host James Lipton and discusses his life, his career accomplishments, and what he learned from his African journey. ~ Nathan Southern, All Movie Guide

It isn't usually until after a popular comic dies that he is declared a "genius" by his fellow comics and elevated to the status of legend -- fortunately for Richard Pryor, his peers have decided to pay homage while he's still around to appreciate it. In his heyday, Pryor was a comedian who wasn't afraid of breaking the rules and shattering the conventions of the era, and his approach to such previously taboo issues as race and sex influenced legions of future comics. Featuring footage from Pryor's remarkable career as well as interviews with such contemporary standup heavies as Dave Chappelle, Denis Leary, Jon Stewart, and Wanda Sykes, this documentary takes viewers on a hilarious and affectionate trip through Pryor's remarkable career. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

Mel Brooks directed and co-wrote this satiric comedy which lampoons a number of cinematic treatments of the legend of Sherwood Forest, including Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and The Adventures of Robin Hood. Robin Hood (Cary Elwes) comes home after fighting in the Crusades to learn that the noble King Richard (Patrick Stewart) is in exile and that the despotic King John (Richard Lewis) now rules England, with the help of the Sheriff of Rottingham (Roger Rees). Eddie Murphy gives one of Jerry Lewis' best-remembered vehicles a 1990s overhaul in this hit comedy. Sherman Klump (Murphy) is a college professor and respected biochemistry researcher who is kind, considerate, and a genuinely nice guy. Sherman is also appallingly overweight; coupled with the fact that he's painfully shy and a bit clumsy, his romantic prospects are rather bleak. When Sherman finds himself working with a pretty graduate student, Carla Purty (Jada Pinkett), he falls in love and is eager to impress her, but at an upscale nightclub, his weight attracts the attention of an insult comic (Dave Chappelle) and his bumbling spoils the evening. Sherman's latest project is a genetic weight loss formula, and despondent over his failure to win Carla's heart, he subjects himself to a massive dose. Suddenly, Sherman is transformed into the slim, trim, and handsome Buddy Love; however, the drug also boosts his testosterone level, turning the likable Sherman into the arrogant, skirt-chasing Buddy. In addition to playing Sherman and Buddy, Eddie Murphy also plays four other members of the porcine Klump family, as well as eccentric exercise guru Lance Perkins. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Undercover Brother began life as an animated series on the Internet. The satirical cartoon was created by novelist and screenwriter John Ridley (Three Kings) for the website urbanentertainment.com. Ridley wrote the screenplay with Michael McCullers, co-writer of the Austin Powers sequels, and it was directed by Malcolm D. Lee (Spike Lee's cousin, and the writer/director of The Best Man). The film stars Eddie Griffin (of TV's Malcolm and Eddie) as Undercover Brother, he of the gold Cadillac convertible and huge Afro, who uses gadgets and disguises to steal from the rich and give to the poor. His activities are discovered by the B.R.O.T.H.E.R.H.O.O.D., a spy organization devoted to subverting The Man (Robert Trumbull) and his henchman, Mr. Feather (Chris Kattan), who use their power over the media to demean black people and destroy racial unity. The spy organization is run by The Chief (Chi McBride), who is constantly screaming at his subordinates. They include Sistah Girl (Aunjanue Ellis), a beautiful martial artist, Conspiracy Brother (Dave Chappelle), who sees white supremacist plots everywhere, and Smart Brother (Gary Anthony Williams, who provided the voice of Undercover Brother in the cartoon), who supplies the operatives with gadgets and information. When a popular black political figure, General Boutwell (Billy Dee Williams), calls a press conference, presumably to announce his presidential candidacy, and instead announces that he's opening a chain of fried chicken restaurants, the B.R.O.T.H.E.R.H.O.O.D. rightly suspects foul play, and recruits Undercover Brother to look into it. He goes undercover as an uptight buppie to work for The Man, but his cover is soon blown, and the seductive White She Devil (Denise Richards) is sent in to use her feminine wiles to destroy Undercover Brother. ~ Josh Ralske, All Movie Guide

Daisy von Scherler Mayer (Madeline, Party Girl) directed this comedy, scripted by David C. Johnson (D.R.O.P. Squad), following the trajectory of a mismatched couple throughout the evening of a blind date in New York (but mostly filmed in Toronto). Extrovert Darlene "Woo" Bates (Jada Pinkett Smith of Scream 2) is one woman who's not afraid to take what she wants, and she has a notorious knack for turning men into mush. When Woo's psychic friend Celestrial (Girlina) predicts that the man of her dreams is about to enter her life, Woo doesn't believe it's true. Celestrial, however, is convinced that Woo is destined to meet a tall, debonair Virgo. Woo's cousin Claudette (Paula Jai Parker of Friday) and Claudette's boyfriend Lenny (Dave Chapelle of Con Air) plan to spend the night together but find themselves entertaining Woo instead. Fearing that his night alone with Claudette will be ruined, Lenny begs his best friend Tim Jackson (Tommy Davidson of Booty Call) to take Woo out -- even though shy, straight-laced law clerk Tim is the polar opposite of the sassy and brassy Woo. At first, Woo expresses disinterest in the matchmaking mismatch. But when she's told that Tim is a Virgo, she decides it's fate, jumps at the chance, and immediately heads for Tim's apartment. Meanwhile, Tim, who can't believe his luck, goes next door to his neighbor Darryl (LL Cool J of B.A.P.S.) for tips on romancing women. Darryl, who knows all the smooth moves, supplies Tim with incense, edible body oils, and a tape of sexy songs. When Woo arrives, Tim is completely smitten. Woo, however, discovers that Tim is anything but the sexy, spontaneous stud of her dreams. Finding Tim's pseudo-cool act totally transparent, she humiliates and teases him. They are just about to exit Tim's apartment when Tim gets a visit from three of his pals -- Frankie (Duane Martin of Getting Personal), Hop (Darrel M. Heath of B.A.P.S.), and Romaine (Michael Ralph of Do the Right Thing). The chauvinistic attitude of these guys irritates Woo, so she retaliates and freaks out the trio with wild, seemingly psycho behavior. Finally, the date gets underway. Woo and Tim arrive at a stuffy Italian restaurant, but Woo's behavior gets them thrown out. They go to a dance club, where Tim becomes the victim, punched out by Woo's ex-boyfriend. Woo likes a good laugh, and when Tim discovers the theft of his flashy new car, she finds this hilarious. "Maybe we could be having a good time, if you could control your psychotic mood swings," says Tim. And so it goes, straight on till morning. Billy Dee Williams portrays himself in a brief fantasy sequence. Sleepless in Seattle director Nora Ephron originally made a name for herself as the writer of romantic comedies such as Heartburn and When Harry Met Sally. She continues the genre with You've Got Mail, marking her second collaboration with actors Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. The story brings romance and courtship into the electronic age of the World Wide Web via e-mail and chat rooms. Joe Fox (Hanks) and Kathleen Kelly (Ryan) live and work blocks from each other on New York City's Upper West Side. Their lives are practically intertwined. They both shop at the same place, frequent the same coffee shop, and even own competing bookstores on the same street. They also both have significant others of their own. Joe has the overly hyper book editor Patricia Eden (Parker Posey), while Kathleen lives with the scholarly newspaper columnist Frank Navasky (Greg Kinnear). Then they meet in a chat room. Though they keep their identities secret (they're known only by screen names "NY152" and "Shopgirl"), they tell each other everything about their lives, including their private feelings, which slowly turn into affection for each other. When Joe decides to open a new branch of his "Foxbooks" chain that risks putting Kathleen's "Shop Around the Corner" out of business, the tension between them escalates. Surely her boutique business will be lost to the conglomerate with a built-in newsstand and coffee bar. When Joe sees Kathleen waiting for him in the restaurant where they agreed to meet up, he puts two and two together, but cannot face her, given their agreement not to reveal each others' names and professions. How can he reveal himself to her now, knowing that he is the cause of her misery? Hopefully, love will conquer all. ~ Chris Gore, All Movie Guide
