Jean Racine's 17th-century tragedy finds Phedre (Marie Bell) professing her love for her stepson when her husband King Thesee is rumored to be dead. When the king returns very much alive, his son Hippolyte is banished and later is killed in a chariot accident. The irate king makes plans to poison his wife for her alleged infidelities with his son. The feature appears to be a filmed version of the play. Jacques Dacqumine plays the king torn between his love for his son and the woman who chose to love the ill-fated Hippolyte. ~ Dan Pavlides, All Movie Guide

A Matter of Resistance is the English-language title of the frothy wartime comedy La Vie De Chateau. Set in occupied France, the film stars Catherine Deneuve as the young and beautiful bride of middle-aged and homely Philipe Noiret. Disappointed at Noiret's indifference concerning the Nazi invaders, Catherine is swept off her feet by handsome Resistance leader Henri Garcin. Throughout the rest of the film, it seems as though the underground operatives and the German officers are more interested in bedding the bewitched Ms. Deneuve than in winning the war. The music by Michel Legrand lends just the right airiness to this captivating farce. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

This black comedy is based on the dastardly deeds of French serial killer Henri-Desire Landru, who wined, dined, scammed, and dismembered over 10 women during WW I. He obtained his victims by placing ads in the Personals section of the paper. He then chose wealthy dowagers in their fifties. First he would woo them to his villa. Then he would con them into forking over their fortunes. Finally he would kill them, chop them up, and immolate the pieces. He is finally captured after he is recognized by the sister of one of the victims. Landru swears that he is not a psychotic killer, that he only did it so he could continue to support his family in the bourgeoisie style that they were accustomed to. During his trial, Landru refused to plead for himself one way or the other; he showed no remorse at all. He was guillotined on February 25, 1922. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide

Like its American namesake, Les Hommes et Blanc (Men in White) is a drama of the medical profession. Raymond Pellegrin stars as Nerac, an idealistic young doctor who feels unsuited to the hustle and bustle of a big-city hospital. Nerac believes that he can serve mankind better by taking a less-lucrative practice in a rural community. Ultimately, he finds his true calling in life, but not before a great many personal crises. Second-billed Jeanne Moreau is given practically nothing to do, and accordingly was ignored by contemporary reviewers. Les Hommes et Blanc was based on the best-selling novel by Andre Soubrion. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Interdit au Public might prove an interesting companion piece to the stage farce Noises Off. The action takes place at a theater during the final dress rehearsal of a new play. The comedy arises from the backstage intrigues involving the actors and tech crew. When the leading lady falls ill (she's been hiding her pregnancy), the director (Jacques Erwin) is forced to rely on his ex-wife (Jacqueline Gauthier) to fill in. This proves to be disastrous when the ex-wife's new husband falls in love with the director's new wife--and that's just for starters. Before long, the farcical entanglements behind the scenes rival anything that any playwright could have dreamed up. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
