A has-been '80s pop star whose phone stopped ringing some time ago, Paul Kerr (Craig Ferguson) is an alcoholic on a downward spiral. After crashing his motorcycle through a window and into a fountain in his estate, Paul is sent to a mental hospital on the assumption that he has become suicidal. When a woman named Rebecca (Jemma Redgrave) shows up one day with teenage Olivia (Charlotte Church), whom she claims is Paul's long lost daughter, both the girl and the depressed singer slowly begin find a new sense of purpose in their lives. Returning to his home to set his life straight with a little help from a former bandmate, a tentative romance develops between Rebecca and Paul. Subsequently discovering that his newfound daughter shares her father's talent for singing, it appears as if Paul may well be on his way to finally finding post-fame happiness in life. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

A pair of professional slackers are confronted by their guardian angels in actor Andrew Rajan's directorial debut, Offending Angels. Forsaking his career in the hustle and bustle of London for a life of leisure, irresponsibility, and the occasional sexual conquest, Baggy's (Rajan) substantial immaturity is dwarfed by that of roommate Sam (Andrew Lincoln), a former department-store security guard who recently lost his job after Baggy used the store to embark on an affair with a married woman. With dashed dreams and commitment issues to spare, the duo is soon confronted by guardian angels Zeke (Shaun Parkes) and Paris (Susannah Harker), formerly a squirrel and a dolphin, respectively. Will Sam and Baggy be able to pull themselves together in time to realize their dreams and pull themselves out of a life of comfortable laziness, or are they destined to spend the rest of their lives in a slacker coma? ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

Don't Get Me Started a combined German and British production directed and written by Arthur Ellis, is a not very funny, not particularly mysterious comic film noir. Jack Lane (Trevor Eve) wants to quit his job as mob hitman and start a new life working as an insurance salesman. Jack, who is mentally disturbed, kills a co-worker and tries to hide the crime. Insurance investigator Jerry Hoff (Steven Waddington) is brought into the case to find out the truth. The direction by Arthur Ellis in uninspired, and he gets only mediocre performances from his cast of stock characters from previous noir films. There is nothing new here, and the attempts at black humor are labored and not very convincing on any level. ~ Linda Rasmussen, All Movie Guide

The six-part British drama series To Have and to Hold starred the versatile Amanda Redman as Viv. In order to make the dreams of her barren sister Ann (Marion Bailey) come true, Viv agrees to act as surrogate mother for Ann's baby. This act of largesse serves only to tear apart the family of the two siblings. Colin (Tim Roth, making his screen debut) and his brother Mark (Phil Daniels, who starred in Quadrophenia) are down and out. They live in a squalid flat with their unemployed father, Frank (Jeff Robert), and their put-upon mother, Mavis (Pam Ferris). They're on the dole, and Mark is constantly scrounging for cash and cadging drinks from his friends, among them Coxy (Gary Oldman in his screen debut), a skinhead. Colin, shy and perhaps mentally disabled, has a crush on a good-natured local girl, Hayley (Tilly Vosburgh). But when Coxy brings him over to her apartment, he can only watch helplessly as a rather ugly scene unfolds. Mark, who is constantly mocking Frank's hypocritical and outdated world view, also makes fun of Colin and calls him "Kermit" and "muppet." Barbara (Marion Bailey, who would later appear in All or Nothing), the boys' middle-class aunt, drops by one day and offers Colin work helping her redecorate her house. Colin seems only mildly interested, but his parents pressure him to take the offer. Mark says that Barbara is exploiting Colin, but his family suspects that Mark is just resentful because Barbara didn't offer him the job. On Colin's first day, Mark turns up at Barbara's to learn that Colin hasn't shown up yet. As Mark and Barbara search the neighborhood for Colin, Mark makes insinuations about the state of Barbara's troubled relationship with her husband, John (Alfred Molina). Meantime, conceived and directed by Mike Leigh, was produced for British television, and shown at the 1984 Berlin International Film Festival. ~ Josh Ralske, All Movie Guide
