As season four of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation drew to a close, it appeared as though a contract dispute would rob the series of two of its most popular characters, Las Vegas PD forensic specialists Sara Sidel (Jorja Fox) and Nick Stokes (George Eads). At the last moment, however, a suitable financial arrangement was worked out, and both characters -- and the actors who played them -- were retained for the whole of season five. Reiko Aylesworth stars in the first episode ("Viva Las Vegas") as Chandra Moore, a dedicated, no-nonsense lab tech who is to replace Greg Sanders (Eric Szmanda) when Greg is promoted to CSI field duty. Both Chandra and Greg prove to be worthy of their new responsibilities, though both are somewhat nonplussed by being dropped head-first into a whole new world of investigation. (Aylesworth's character was dropped after Fox and Eads resolved their contracts.) In a major mid-season development, a storm of controversy attending the apparent bungling of a murder investigation prompts CSI boss Ecklie (Marc Vann) to split the forensics bureau into two teams, with senior officer Gil Grissom (William L. Petersen) heading one team, and his former assistant Catherine Willows (Marg Helgenberger) heading another. The arrangement is hardly to the liking of either party, especially when the efficiency their investigations is compromised by radical and often arbitrary budget cuts. Other demons plaguing the CSIers this season include the return of a particularly vicious (and brilliant) serial killer from the earlier episode "The Execution of Catherine Willows," the revelation that a man with whom Catherine flirted in a bar is the prime suspect in a high-profile murder case, and the unpleasant childhood memories of Sara Sidel. The Grissom and Willows teams are reunited for the season's unbearably suspenseful finale, "Grave Danger" (a two-parter directed by Quentin Tarantino) as the combined officers search for their colleague Nick Stokes (George Eads), who has been buried alive in a casket filled with red ants by a maniacal murderer. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

A wandering black sheep attempts to gain his angel wings when his large inheritance turns out to be a small church in director Tom Reeve's touching tale of love and redemption. Raymond (Andrew McCarthy) has never been the most popular member of his family, but thanks to a little help from his generous brother Otis, Raymond has always managed to scrape by even in the hardest of times. Just when it seems that things couldn't look any worse, Raymond receives word that he has inherited a property on the English countryside. Upon arrival, Raymond discovers that the property is neither an expansive manor nor a cozy house, but instead a decrepit stone church on the edge of ruin. When conniving village businessman Malcolm Slee (Bill Treacher) approaches Raymond about purchasing the property so that he may ransack the place in search of King Charles' mythical treasure rumored to have been hidden there at the end of the English War, Raymond initially agrees before learning from local bed and breakfast owner Rachel (Louise Lombard) that a poor family has taken shelter in the crumbling house of worship. With the bond between Raymond and Rachel growing ever stronger, and a little help from a friendly young orphan named Diggity (Max Dolbey), Raymond may shed his shady ways and make it to the pearly gates after all. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

William Shakespeare's King Lear is transposed into a modern-dress British crime drama in this tense tale of family ties and the lust for power. Sandeman (Richard Harris) is the elderly leader of a Liverpool crime syndicate who is fiercely loyal to his wife Mandy (Lynn Redgrave) and his daughters Jo (Emma Catherwood), Tracy (Lorraine Pilkington), and Kath (Louise Lombard). When Mandy is shot dead during a street robbery, Sandeman is shattered, and decides it's time to turn the business over to one of his daughters. Jo, the middle child, has long been Sandeman's favorite, and he decides to give her control of the business, as well as the lion's share of his estate when he dies. Loyal Jo, however, does not want to get involved in her father's dealings, which leads to a heated battle between Tracy and Kath over Sandeman's empire; adding fuel to the fire are Dean (Paul McGann), a strong-arm man for Sandeman who's married to Kath, and Jug (Jimi Mistry), Tracy's spouse and a notorious drug dealer. As a civil war rages among Sandeman's family and associates over control of his syndicate, police officer Puttnam (Aidan Gillen) and customs agent Quick (Tom Bell) make one last attempt to put Sandeman behind bars before he retires from his life of crime. Debuting May 1, 2000, the British "dramedy" series Metropolis concerned itself with six friends who'd met while attending college. Keeping in touch after graduation, the six protagonists continued to be linked with one another physically, spiritually, and sometimes sexually. Presented by Granada Television, Metropolis was sabotaged by the network's decision to schedule the program on an irregular, erratic basis. Also, the series never quite made up its mind if it wanted to be a half-hour sitcom or an hour-long drama. A character drama from South Africa set in the apartheid era, After the Rain focuses on Steph (Paul Bettany), an Afrikaner soldier with more than his share of emotional problems. His girlfriend (Louise Lombard) is close friends with Joseph (Ariyon Bakare), and when Steph returns home one day to find the two in bed together, he immediately thinks the worst (even though their relationship is entirely platonic). Steph ties the two up, and forces them to listen to his hateful invective for the rest of the evening. This collection of skits from the fourth series of French & Saunders lives up to its title. Although the comedic duo takes aim at British culture, BBC TV, pop stars, and the Middle Ages, most of the material focuses on Hollywood parody. Dawn French takes on a pair of box-office villains as she pokes fun at Anthony Hopkins in Silence of the Lambs and Kathy Bates in Misery; partner Jennifer Saunders, meanwhile, essays the Jodie Foster and James Caan roles, respectively. French experiences the familiar progression from face-hugger to stomach-exploder in a send-up of Aliens that also features Kathy Burke standing in for Jenette Goldstein as Pvt. Vasquez. Thelma and Louise also gets the patented F&S treatment. Other sketches include faux music videos for the Mamas and the Papas, Guns N' Roses, and Shakespear's Sister; "Lucky Bitches," a parody of celebrity sisters Joan and Jackie Collins; and an elaborate re-creation of the historical soap House of Eliott, in which the show's original stars, Stella Gonet and Louise Lombard, appear. The DVD edition of French & Saunders: At the Movies also includes the duo's 1999 Christmas special French & Saunders: The Phantom Millennium, an elaborate parody of Star Wars: Episode I -- The Phantom Menace. ~ Brian J.
