Pieter Kramer's musical comedy Ja Zuster Nee Zuster (Yes Nurse! No Nurse!) is an adaptation of a popular 1960s Dutch television series. Loes Luca portrays Klivia, who runs a nursing home filled with colorful eccentrics. Complicating Klivia's life is professional thief Gerrit (Waldemar Torenstra), who is pursuing her daughter, Jet (Tjitske Reidinga). Boordevol (Paul R. Kooij) lives near the nursing home and constantly brings legal complaints against Klivia due to the noise coming from the nursing home. Yes Nurse! No Nurse! was screened in competition at the 2003 Berlin Film Festival. ~ Perry Seibert, All Movie Guide

This satirical Dutch film was the debut of its director-writer-star, Alex Van Warmerdam. Abel is a 31-year old man who still lives with his parents and is petrified of the outside world. His parents try their best to socialize him -- in some very funny scenes -- before his father (Henri Garcin) finally kicks him out. Abel does adjust and even finds love, the catch being that his paramour (Annet Malherbe) happens to be his father's mistress. Van Warmerdam's theatrical background is very much in evidence, as the cinematography (by Marc Felperlaan) and set design recall nothing so much as an off-Broadway play, albeit an occasionally hilarious one. ~ Robert Firsching, All Movie Guide

Made for theatrical release by a Dutch TV production firm, this stars Renee Soutendijk in the title role. The Girl is a Dutch wartime resistance leader, who is killed before the film proper gets under way. Through the reminiscences of her best friend, we are given every detail of the Girl's life, loves and dreams (she was a sheltered college student at the outbreak of the War). We also learn what inspired the Girl to become a sang froid assassin of Nazi informers. Director Ben Verbong collaborated on the screenplay with Peter de Vos, author of the factual book (Theun de Vries) upon which the film was based. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
