The Man Who Cried was one of many miniseries adaptations of the works of Catherine Cookson which aired on British television in the 1990s. Set during the Depression years, the series starred Ciaran Hinds as unhappily married Abel Mason. Attempting to escape his insufferable wife Lena (Angela Walsh), Abel flees to Yorkshire, where he enters into an illegal matrimonial union with a wealthy widow. The web of deceit becomes even more tangled when Abel falls in love with his new "wife's" sister Florrie (Kate Buffrey). In this British drama, the sorts of Britons who live in colonial encampments outside of Britain tend to be the most conventional people imaginable, recreating a little bit of home (and not the most interesting bits) in whatever uncouth foreign place they have landed in. In this story, they are living in Africa, and Johnny Deacon (Tom Bell) is so very tired of them. He's tired of his ex-girlfriend who married another; he's tired of his ex-girlfriend's mother, and he's tired of the men. In 1939 Hamburg, Germany, a group of teenagers express their rebellion against Adolph Hitler's Nazi regime through their affection for American swing music, British fashion, and Harlem slang. American and British big-band jazz records are among those banned by the Fuhrer, but the young men secretly get together with their friends to listen and dance to the music. As their escapades become increasingly bold, they each get into trouble with the authorities. Robert Sean Leonard stars as Peter, who ends up being forced -- by a prank -- into having to join the Hitler Youth with his friend Thomas (Christian Bale). They are both engineering students at the university, where Thomas' father was taken away for defending his Jewish colleagues. With Arvid (Frank Whaley), they pretend to be Nazi supporters by day while rebelling with the swing music by night. Kenneth Branagh, in an uncredited appearance, is a glib Nazi Gestapo chief who makes matters more difficult. Each of the boys must choose among family, safety, friendship, and freedom as politics impinges on their youthful exuberance, and the Nazis set them against one another. Director Ken Russell returns to the D.H. Lawrence territory that had earlier served him well in Women in Love. Sammi Davis plays Lawrence's Welsh heroine Ursula Brangwen, daughter of a wealthy mine owner, who is first seen as a child given to literally chasing rainbows. Disappointed that she can never have the real thing, the older Davis seeks out figurative rainbows in the form of sexual fulfillment. Neither heterosexual nor homosexual affairs fully satisfy Davis, because no one lover can match the "ideal" the girl has created in her imagination. Davis' disappointment in the world is paralleled with the sorry lot of the wives of the local coal miners, who have adapted to their lives--something Davis can never do, will never do. Stately despite its raw subject matter, The Rainbow was filmed just before Russell's outrageous sword-and-sorcery fantasy Lair of the White Worm; since both films utilize many of the same cast members, the two pictures might make an astonishing double feature. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

No, the British TV series Wing and a Prayer had nothing to do with WWII aviators. Instead, the series devoted itself to the exploits of a young and hungry law firm, populated by young, hungry, and very attractive lawyers. In the fine tradition of such American weeklies as L.A. Law and The Practice, the attorneys herein played as hard as they worked, with sexual intrigues and one-upsmanship abounding. WWII was remembered from a distinctly feminist point of view in the long-running British drama series Wish Me Luck. Jane Asher was cast as Faith Ashley, London-based coordinator for a team of female resistance fighters, who journeyed behind enemy lines to confound the Nazis. Ashley's chief operatives (and virtually the only ones to survive all 23 episodes) were Liz Grainger (Kate Buffery) and Matty Firman (Suzanna Hamilton).
