Helen Mirren played the title character in the two-part British miniseries Painted Lady. In the throes of poverty and drug abuse, Irish folk singer Maggie Sheridan (Mirren) pulled herself together when her wealthy and well-connected landlord was murdered and robbed of several valuable works of art. Posing as an art dealer, Maggie not only wreaked vengeance upon the thieves, but also had time left over for a torrid interracial romance. And, as a bonus, the heroine ended up a Countess, no less. Debuting over British television on December 7, 1997, Painted Lady made its American TV bow on April 26, 1998. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

This made-for-television drama is a two-hour movie from the Britain's Robin of Sherwood series. Michael Praed stars as the legendary Robin Hood, possessor of one of the seven sought-after Swords of Wayland. In this installment, Robin defends himself against a coven of witches posing as nuns. New-age music pioneers Clannad provide the soundtrack music. ~ Bernadette McCallion, All Movie Guide
Filmed in England, Reunion at Fairborough served as the fourth movie pairing of Robert Mitchum and Deborah Kerr. Mitchum plays a disgruntled American, who arrives in England for a reunion with his old wartime bombing squadron. Ms. Kerr plays the local woman whom Mitchum had seduced and left behind forty years earlier. She greets her ex-love with the daunting news that he's a father -- and grandfather. Too verbose for its own good, Reunion at Fairborough fails to ignite the same sparks as the earlier Mitchum/Kerr teamings (Heaven Knows, Mr. Allison (1957), The Sundowners (1960), The Grass is Greener (1961)), but at least it's attractively photographed. Originally telecast as an "HBO Premiere" on May 12, 1985, Reunion at Fairborough was briefly released theatrically overseas. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Michael Praed took over from Jason Connery (Sean's son) in the title role of Robin Hood: The Swords of Wayland, one of several mid-1980s British TV movies based on the legendary do-gooder. As in most of these "revisionist" films, Robin's battle is not with such corporeal villains as Prince John or the Sheriff of Nottingham, but with the Supernatural. This time he's up against an evil priestess, played by onetime TV-commercial favorite Rula Lenska. Judi Trott repeats her role of Maid Marian from the earlier Jason Connery "Robin Hood" installments. Robin Hood: The Swords of Wayland was filmed in 1984; its American cable-TV debut occurred five years later. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Robin Hood and the Spirit of Sherwood was one of the first 2-hour installments of the popular BBC TV series of the early 1980s. Michael Praed (later replaced by Jason Connery) stars as Robin Hood, with Judi Trott as Maid Marian. In keeping with the "sword and sorcery" ambience of the series, Robin is forced to contend with an unearthly force that holds Sherwood Forest in its clutches. Premiering on British TV in 1983, Robin Hood and the Spirit of Sherwood was shown in the US on cable TV a year or so later. It was reissued to commercial TV channels in 1991 to cash in on Kevin Costner's theatrical film Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
Robin Hood and the Time of the Wolf was one of several mid-1980s Robin Hood movies made for British TV. Jason Connery, son of Sean, portrays the Sherwood forest bandit. The story is strictly from Conan the Barbarian, as Robin struggles with an evil sorcerer who'd plagued him during his "Earl of Huntingdon" days. Judi Trott shows up as Maid Marian, a role she would continue to play in several subsequent Robin Hood TV movies opposite Michael Praed. Robin Hood and the Time of the Wolf was first shown in the US on the Showtime Cable Service. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
