References to the films of Alfred Hitchcock abound in this roller-coaster of an episode, in which Jim (James Garner) is mistakenly identified as a spy named Terrence Halsey. Unable to convince the Feds that he isn't who they think he is, Jim ends up being dispatched to South America, there to help a wide-eyed heiress (Dorrie Kavanaugh) whose villainous husband (Don Chastain) is using her family's good name to engineer a swindle. See if you can spot the "swipes" from such Hitchcock classics as North by Northwest, Saboteur and especially Notorious. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
Everyone at the station house breathes a small sigh of relief when tough-as-nails Captain Hochrader (Joe Maross) announces his retirement. Deciding to celebrate "Captain Hook"'s departure with a wild party, the gang works hard (perhaps a little too hard) to convince the Captain that it's actually going to be his retirement bash. Elsewhere, the team rescues some Highway Patrol officers from a crashed helicopter, and a woman in a bear costume who has collapsed from heat prostration. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
Amy Milner, the daughter of Adam-12 costar Martin Milner (Officer Pete Malloy), makes her dramatic TV debut in this episode. The younger Milner is cast as Debbie McMahon, the daughter of a storekeeper who is wounded in a robbery. Outraged that the perpetrator has managed to escape, Debbie holds Officer Jim Reed (Kent McCord) responsible. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Officer Pete Malloy (Martin Milner) is held hostage by a young self-styled revolutionary. The man wants his fellow "rebel", who has been arrested for killing a pimp, released from jail immediately--and is using Pete's life as a bargaining chip. Featured in the cast as a witness to Pete's kidnapping is Kristen McCord, the daughter of series costar Kent McCord (Officer Jim Reed). ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
Elaine Heilveil guest stars as Karen Overstreet, a female paramedic trainee with a hostile attitude who feels she must continually prove her worth to her all-male colleagues. On the job, it is Roy (Kevin Tighe) who ends up needing emergency medical attention after trying to save an invalid from a fire. Elsewhere, an attempted suicide changes his mind a shade too late, and the paramedics struggle to revive the victim of a pulmonary embolism, and a freeway construction crew accidentally imperils an elderly couple. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
Dick Van Patten guest stars as Harry Curtis, a lovable drunk whose hilarious wisecracks have arresting officers Jim Reed (Kent McCord) and Pete Malloy (Martin Milner) in stitches. What isn't so funny is the desperation which Harry is hiding under his clownish veneer--in fact, it can be said that he's laughing to keep from crying. Perhaps inevitably, this story ends on a somber note...and need we add, no one feels like laughing. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
After the Rampart emergency team subdues a wild bear on a movie set, film star Vic Webster (played by Batman's Adam West) invites the firemen, paramedics and doctors to a lavish Hollywood party. But the crew barely has time to soak in all the glamour when another, more serious crisis occurs. Back at the hospital, Dr. Brackett (Robert Fuller) focuses his energies on a trichinosis victim. And in the field, a man threatens to blow himself up during a shootout with the cops. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
The title of this episode is something of a misnomer: It's anything but routine for Officers Jim Reed (Kent McCord) and Pete Malloy (Martin Milner) when they pursue four young car thieves. The quartet has stolen a vehicle full of weaponry and ammunition, and now they're taking advantage of this fact by going on a violent crime spree. Other crises facing Jim and Pete tonight include a "dead spouse" report and an outsized bar fight. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

John (Randolph Mantooth) is determined to find out why Roy (Kevin Tighe) has had so much luck picking winning horses from the daily "dope sheets". Back on the job, the Squad 51 team tries to rescue a woman who has fallen into the lion cage at the zoo, a cop who has been wounded by a sniper, and a disco dancer who has collapsed in mid-dance. Then there's that wayward skateboarder who ends up in a cactus patch... ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
Officers Pete Malloy (Martin Milner) and Jim Reed (Kent McCord) are assigned to escort criminal Charlie Shanks (William Campbell) to jail. While shuffling their prisoner through Malibu Canyon, the two cops are ambushed by a pair of hired killers who are determined to prevent Shanks from ever testifying in court. The situation worsens when the killers take Jim hostage, offering to exchange his life for Shanks'. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
This comedy was banned in Mexico and plagued by vandalism and threats of violence during film production in San Antonio, Texas. General De Santos (Peter Ustinov) organizes a ragtag group of Mexican nationals for the purpose of retaking the Alamo. Using the Washington's Birthday Parade in Laredo as a guise to enter the United States, the group continues towards San Antonio ignored and unchallenged. With the help of Sergeant Valdez (John Astin), the unlikely invaders manage to raise the Mexican flag over the old mission for 24 hours. General Billy Joe Hallson (Jonathan Winters) is a colorful redneck called on to lead the National Guard to the site of the occupied landmark. Keenan Wynn, Alice Ghostley, Pamela Tiffin and Harry Morgan also star in this film farce. During filming, one irate Texan was arrested after waving a rifle in protest over the raising of the Mexican flag over the Alamo, long a symbol of Texas' pride and history. Electric cables were cut during the filming of this production, as some Texans could not even tolerate the fictional premise of the plot. ~ Dan Pavlides, All Movie Guide

Not only is Jim Reed (Kent McCord) a rookie cop, but he's also about to become a rookie father--and he is extremely nervous as his wife Jean (Mikki Jamison) is wheeled into the maternity ward. Tonight's case load includes a somewhat befuddled matador who is flailing his cape and shouting "Ole!" in the middle of heavy traffic. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
