Claude Berri's angry, ambitious epic, based on the 19th-century novel by Emile Zola, re-creates, as does the novel, the gut-wrenching poverty and the intense day-by-day struggles of striking French coal-miners in 1884 at the Voreux mines of France. The film centers upon the bitter toils of Maheu (Gerard Depardieu) and his family -- consisting of his iron-willed wife (Miou-Miou) and their daughter Catherine (Judith Henry), who also works in the mines. When a new miner, Etienne Lantier (Renaud), comes to Voreux to seek work, he is befriended by Maheu, who takes him on his mining crew and allows him to stay at his home. Etienne is also an organizer for a new miner's union and, as conditions in the Voreux mines worsen, Etienne convinces Maheu to organize a miner's strike. Meanwhile, Etienne is attracted to Catherine, and Catherine to him, but she doesn't act upon her feelings, taking up, instead, with Chaval (Jean-Roger Milo), a local ne'er do well. As conditions in the mines become more desperate and unsafe, and the owners propose to cut wages, Maheu at last stages a massive strike of the miners. When that happens, the owners send in armed soldiers to defend the mines. ~ Paul Brenner, Rovi

The Italians have bocce ball, and the French have a similar game, boules. This is played (generally in the southern part of the country) with steel balls on a packed-earth court. While these games have a bucolic, countrified and even genteel air about them, competition and betting are fierce. In this sports/crime thriller, a young man whose father was killed for violating the unspoken roles of the game in professional competition trains with his grandfather to become a champion boules player just like his father. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

Simon and Dede are best friends: two aimless drunks who spend their days getting sloshed and any other available time getting laid. Simon is living on unemployment benefits in a trailer parked near his sister's apartment. Dede works at a fish-packing plant on the night shift. Neither man is sensitive, young, or good looking. However, their sang-froid (literally, "cold blood," referring to a quality of imperturbability) stands them in good stead as they go about their seedy lives, picking up one woman and having sex with her on the beach, or when Simon calmly has sex with a prostitute in front of the woman's brother. In the past, a bizarre necrophiliac situation led to Simon experiencing his only sense of what it might be to truly love someone. This unedifying tale is based on stories by the American writer Charles Bukowski, whose melancholy works have provided endless inspiration for European filmmakers. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

This fast-paced mystery is in part based on a novel by Yves Ellena and is at least equally based on the 1943 classic Le Corbeau, which in 1951 was produced in English by Otto Preminger as The Thirteenth Letter. In this movie, someone is using a pirate radio broadcast to dish the dirt on the lives of the elite of a small French town. Among the suspects for this increasingly damaging activity are a cynical journalist and an unusually honest cop. The story proceeds to a climax in the town's church, while the increasingly vituperative townspeople clash with one another. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

A long parade of actors and actresses pop up in an unconnected series of skits, vignettes, and sight gags in this comedy anthology by Jean Curtelin. Among the sketches performed is one with Jean Carmet playing a man from the sticks woefully burdened with the challenge of getting through a dog food commercial on less than one tank of intelligible French. Another skit shows a silent duel between an airport custodian and an automatic door, while another with the renowned Michel Galabru sets up a strange teacher-student exchange. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

Corruption in the rarified air of the corporate and governmental elite drives the action in this fast-paced thriller. As Claire arrives, she sees a band of arsonists burn the city down, lock, stock, and water barrel. The iron-clad official statement is that the incinerated town had an unfortunate gas explosion. This blatant lie propels Claire to find out who torched the town, and why no one in government is listening to her. Meanwhile, Jeff Montellier (Richard Anconina), an employee of a company that transports lethal chemicals, finds out that a dangerous accident in the destroyed town poisoned its water supply. Basically an updated take on "Bringing Up Baby," this screwy French comedy centers on the travails of a paleontologist (Gerard Depardieu) whose delight at finding the skeleton of the first French woman is dampened by the presence of an aggressive advertising executive (Sigourney Weaver) who is determined to exploit the find to sell her perfume. Both of the rivals also compete to earn a generous grant from an aging philanthropist (Dr.Ruth Westheimer). ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi

The hectic life which Clare (Francoise Lebrun) lives during two special days is the focus of this comedy. While doing market research, quizzing women at various locations about their makeup needs and wishes, she sees a young man have a motorcycle accident, and takes him to the hospital. The man, however, is actually a girl. Later, when a racist shop-owner insults a foreign customer in her presence, she has a flamboyant fit of indignation. Similarly dramatic brief encounters, including one romantic assignation, punctuate Clare's life during the two days. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi
