By way of explanation, Trente-Six Chandelies (Thirty-Six Candles) was a popular French TV series of the late 1950s. C'est Arrive a Trente-Six Chadelies is ostensibly the story of a young girl (Jane Sourza) who is separated from her boyfriend (Jacques Riberolles) by her social-climbing parents. In desperation, the boy takes to the air on the titular TV weekly to plead for his beloved's return. Were that all there was to the film, the audience would be home in bed after 25 minutes. Instead, the film uses its TV-studio setting as an excuse for a parade of top Parisian variety acts. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Monsieur Fernandel plays the sheep-shearer, who makes a decision to say goodbye to the little lambs and to concentrate on the beautiful mademoiselles. Sacre bleu! It is tres funny (almost like the Jerry Lewis film, yes?) when Fernandel becomes the hairdresser, and begins clipping the ladies much in the manner of the sheep. And Fernandel's wife, she is not so happy over the many ladies that Fernandel is shearing. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Virtually plotless, Surprises Radio is little more than a nonstop parade of specialty numbers, performed by some of France's top radio stars. The film was clearly designed to allow the rural radio fans a rare opportunity to see their favorites "in the flesh." In this respect, the film is a valuable record of a form of entertainment that has long since passed from the scene. Otherwise, Surprises Radio is no better nor worse than such Hollywood airwave extravaganzas as Radio City Revels and Radio Stars on Parade. And with a running time of 80 minutes, it is surprising that the film's stars weren't given even more opportunity to strut their stuff; as it stands, they all seem to be cut short just as they're warming up. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
