This made-for-television drama is about Nicki Davis (Tracy Pollan) -- an 18-year-old from a wealthy family who hangs out with a drug-dealing boyfriend -- and Tim Donovan (John Savage), the dedicated probation officer trying to get Nicki to come to grips with the reality of what she is doing. Nicki's predilection for the demimonde becomes a challenge that Tim cannot drop, and while it leads him into the drug world and an unwanted confrontation with Tracy's father -- who feels his daughter's life is no one else's business -- Tim does not give up. Real-life father and son Martin Sheen and Emilio Estevez star in the made-for-TV In the Custody of Strangers. Blue-collar Sheen and his wife Jane Alexander attempt to instill discipline in their three growing children. But their 16-year-old son Estevez chafes at their authoritative attitudes, and runs seriously afoul of the law. Picked up on a drunk-driving charge, Estevez is charged with assault and battery when he fights off the sexual advances of his cellmate. His release continually delayed by judicial red tape, Estevez holds his parents, who are virtually helpless within the strictures of the Law, responsible for the mess he's in. But the real villain of the piece is not a person but an entity: The juvenile justice system, which is overworked, understaffed and swamped with dead-end bureaucracy. Filmed independently in Boston, Dark End of the Street was the follow-up (but not the sequel) to the Boston-based indie Billy in the Lowlands. The same director (Jan Egleson) and star (Henry Tomaszewski) teamed up for this wholly believable evocation of blue-collar life in a big, impersonal metropolis. Tomaszewski and Laura Harrington portray white teenagers, who look on in horror as their African American friend is accidentally killed. The cast is largely comprised of performers from the Theatre Company of Boston. The one recognizable "name" in Dark End of the Street is veteran film baddie Lance Henriksen. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Billy in the Lowlands stars Henry Tomaszewski as a wild youth who spends the better part of his time in the Massachussetts penal system. Billy busts out of jail, wanders through the streets of Boston, and does his best to re-establish a relationship with his aloof father. The film was produced independently in hopes of finding a major distributor via the film-festival circuit. The Theatre Company of Boston picked up the production tab and provided most of the acting talent. Director Jan Egleson followed up Billy in the Lowlands with the like-themed 1981 Dark End of the Street, which was also filmed in Boston and also featured Henry Tomaszewski. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
