This suspenseful thriller by Bo Widerberg (Man On The Roof) is based on a novel by Leif G.W. Persson about two plainclothes detectives out to solve a robbery and some murders that appear to involve a corrupt government minister. The police inspectors' suspicions increase when some authorities start blocking their investigation. Rasmus (Erik Lindgren) is a little orphan whose need for companionship leads him to seek the friendship of a hobo accordian player (Allan Edwall). The two hit it off quite well, and the hobo decides he has to somehow try to find a home for himself and the boy - though that does not look like a very viable option from the start. Bouts of violence alternate with meandering dialogue in this routine drama about conflicts between militarists and a variety of evil characters, and a female journalist and her pilot friend, both defending the remnants of democracy. The setting is Sweden at some point in the future, when terrorists and environmentalists are active and the government is trying to control all energy sources. The corporation intends to transform a region of Sweden into "Angel Territory." The locals look favorably on the idea until they begin to consider who would benefit from this change. As that would only be those who are the already wealthy land and business owners, they come to oppose the scheme. A whimsical menage-a-trois forms the basis of this comedy drama that tells the tale of an eccentric aspiring writer who is tossed out by his girlfriend. A good friend of the forlorn fellow feels sorry for him and allows him to stay in his apartment. The friend's wife is less than enthused by the intrusion as the writer is truly odd. Eventually she comes to care for him and will not let him leave. Trouble ensues when the writer brings a boorish typing teacher to live with them. The two oddballs soon dominate the apartment. The poor husband and wife desperately want to get rid of the typist and so conspire to have the wife pretend to seduce the writer. Unfortunately, the seduction turns out to be quite real. One weekend, he meets and falls for Anita (Christina Schollin), the pretty single mother of six-year-old Helent (Helene Nilsson). The film opens with John and Anita in bed together, sharing their life stories with each other. John begins to hope his relationship with Anita will grow into something permanent, but Anita is not convinced that his intentions are altogether honorable. Jazzgossen (The Jazz Boy) is the filmed biography of famed Swedish showbiz entrepreneur Teddy Anker. During the Roaring '20s, socialite Anker (played by Hasse Ekman, who also directed), diverts his family millions into managing a nightclub, promoting prizefights, inaugurating a movie company, and various and sundry other forms of entertainment-industry largesse. Losing his fortune in the financial crash of the early 1930s, Anker picks himself up, dusts himself off, and starts all over again. The story ends during WWII when, despite Sweden's neutrality, Anker vows to do his bit for the war effort. Several of Teddy Anker's contemporaries play themselves, including musican Karl Gerhard, who originally popularized the title song. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
