In this comic and perceptive story, Billy mistakes another apartment for his own on the eve of his wedding and wanders in to meet a woman who immediately mesmerizes him, causing all sorts of problems in what used to be an uncomplicated life. After Billy (Richard Berry) and his bride-to-be Nina (Zoe Chauveau) move into a housing project still in its finishing stages, Billy walks into the wrong apartment when he forgets which floor he is supposed to be on. When he sees Viviane (Brigitte Fossey) he is transfixed by her, and since her husband has just ended their marriage, she is particularly susceptible. Without explaining where he actually lives or that he is getting married, Billy seduces Viviane, but then does not have the courage to break off his wedding. When Viviane rejects their affair and takes off for Paris, Billy goes in search of her -- not knowing that Nina's father has caught on to Billy's extra-marital activities and would like to express a few viewpoints of his own in that regard. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

This screen version of Victor Hugo's classic novel stars Italian actor Lino Ventura as Jean Valjean, a French peasant who -- driven to desperation by poverty -- steals a loaf of bread only to be caught by the police. After serving a long prison term for this petty theft, Valjean is tempted to return to a life of crime upon his release, but an act of mercy by a kindly Bishop gives him a fresh start. Valjean gains a new determination to build a better life for himself, and in time he becomes a respected citizen, a successful businessman, and the mayor of a small town. However, Javert (Michel Bouquet), who was once a guard at the prison where Valjean was held, is now a police captain and knows the truth about the criminal history Valjean prefers not to discuss. Javert is convinced that Valjean is not as honest as he seems, and he obsessively pursues him, determined to one day put him back behind bars. Based on a real-life case study, recorded in Jean-Marc Gaspard Itard's 1806 volume Memoire et Rapport sur Victor de L'Aveyron, The Wild Child is spiritually in line with François Truffaut's other films about the pains of adolescence. Truffaut himself plays Dr. Jean Itard, a doctor working at Paris' Institute for the Deaf and Dumb. Itard takes on the challenge of Victor (Jean-Pierre Cargol), a nonverbal "wild boy" found abandoned in the woods. Realizing that the Institute's rather cruel methods may drive Victor further into himself, Dr. Itard brings the boy to his own home, hoping to establish a communication base with kindness and compassion. Once he has taught Victor how to listen and respond, Itard takes it upon himself to imbue the boy with a sense of morality. Adopting an austere cinematic technique (at times reminiscent of silent films), Truffaut unfolds his story with directness and simplicity. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
