Dentist Sheldon Kornpett (Alan Arkin) is a respectable man. He has a daughter who is about to marry the son of a very suspicious character, Vince Ricardo (Peter Falk). They are practically relatives already, the wedding is so near. Certainly, Sheldon already despises Vince as if he were already a well-known relative. Nontheless, Vince calls on Sheldon and convinces him to go with him on a series of wild and hilarious adventures, claiming all the while that he is a CIA agent, and that what he is doing is in the national interest. Sheldon follows Vince to a South American country ruled by a very odd man, General Garcia (Richard Libertini), who talks to his hand (which talks back). John (Randolph Mantooth) comes face to face with corporate bureaucracy when he falls victim to a credit-card computer error. On the job, the paramedics try to rescue a car-accident victim who may be pregnant, a woman who has fallen down a well, and a junkyard owner exposed to phosphorous materials. Comedian Larry Storch puts in an appearance as an amateur magician who gets trapped in a safe during an abortive escape act, while future Happy Days costar Donny Most shows up as an anguished father-to-be. Buffy (Johnnie Whitaker) and Jody (Anissa Jones) are terrified when a Criswell-like TV psychic predicts that New York will be destroyed by a tidal wave. Though there are some otherwise responsible adults who swallow this story whole, Uncle Bill (Brian Keith) is not one of them, and he must work overtime to convince the twins that their fears are groundless. But when Bill suddenly has to leave New York, the kids jump to the obvious conclusion and the situation gets far worse than imagined! Paladin (Richard Boone) gallantly agrees to protect baby-faced Jenny Lake (Ellen Clark) against a man named Wilson (Peter Leeds), whom Jenny claims is an unwanted suitor. In short order, Wilson manages to bushwack Paladin--who promptly returns the favor and follows Jenny to a den of counterfeiters.
