Domenico Modugno Movies
Italian singer/songwriter and actor Domenico Modugno's career spanned the '50s through the '70s; he was best-known for singing the international hit "Volare," which Modugno co-wrote. Other hits include "Piove." His success as a singer led to a sporadic film career that began in 1961. In this lightweight comedy, David McCallum stars as Stanley Thrumm, a retiring British tour guide who strikes it rich one night in a casino on the Riviera. But Carla Moretti (Sylva Koscina), an apparently helpful woman whom he has met, has designs on the loot, and she enlists her ex-husband in an effort to get it. An episodic, funny, though uneven spoof of human manners and foibles, this comedy by Vittorio de Sica begins in Naples when a disembodied voice announces to the city's residents "The Last Judgment will begin at 6:00 p.m." Naturally, not all are immediately willing to accept this statement -- but not for long. As comic vignettes unfold, the good citizens soon become even better as they try to undo past and present sins, just in case. An entertaining, clever, amusing, and exciting variety show, Europa di Notte features a witty narration and the talents of performers from a wide range of fields. Among the most known to American audiences are Domenico Modugno and The Platters but judging by the quality of the acts, every other performer deserves equal recognition. Carmen Sevilla does an impressive dance routine, and magicians like Channing Pollock and others provide plenty of entrancing illusions. Then there are the guys from the Parisian Crazy Horse Saloon, who take almost all of it off but clothe the entire act in enough humor to pass muster with most audiences.
